Torres Fifth After First Day at Pac-12 Championship

May 09, 2015 | Track and Field

LOS ANGELES – After the first day of competition at the 2015 Pac-12 Track and Field Championships, University of Colorado junior Abrianna Torres is fifth overall in the heptathlon with 3,304 points.

Torres got the day off to a good start, clocking a personal best 14.35 in the 100-meter hurdles. She tied for third in the high jump, narrowly missing her PR (5-6) with a jump of 5-5.75. In the shot put, Torres again just missed her PR (45-4.50), throwing a season-best 45-3.50 which was good for second. The mark, however, was the best throw for Torres during a heptathlon which broke her heptathlon shot put school record of 44-0.25. The final event was the 200 and she finished 10th in 26.24.

Junior Ewelina Pena is 11th in the heptathlon with 2,776 points and freshman Michaela Wenning is currently 12th (2,741). Sophomore Mariah Slack ranks 14th at the end of the first day with 2,662 points. Pena recorded a PR in the high jump, tying for third with Torres and Wenning at 5-5.75. Slack also had a PR during the competition, finishing the 100-hurdles in 16.01.

“The weather was fantastic and the energy of the group was absolutely amazing and we ended the day with a bunch of first day PRs, which is great,” assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. “Abrianna had a 30-point PR, which is huge for her, and she will have a big second day. Michaela and Mariah had about 30-40 point PRs. Our women did great in the high jump and Abrianna had a huge shot put to break the school record.”

Freshman Andrew Ghizzone, the only Buff competing in the decathlon, is 13th after the first day with 3,343 points. He was 13th in the 100, finishing in 11.65, and placed 12th in the long jump (20-6.25). Ghizzone was 14th in the shot put (32-9.75) and tied for 11th in the high jump after clearing 6-1.50. He finished the day seventh in the 400, clocking in at 50.15.

“Andrew had five PRs in five events,” Malone said. “He's having a great first day and is 101 points above his previous best first day score. For freshman year, this is going really well. He has already set the mark for junior nationals and now he has up'd it. Tomorrow is technically his bigger point day, so hopefully the weather lasts.

“So far this has been a great Pac-12 meet. I'm very positive about the atmosphere. The competition level is outstanding and the team is thriving. I can't wait to see a lot of great performances tomorrow.”

UCLA's Tatum Souza ended the day with the best score in the heptathlon at 3,407. Pau Tonneson (Arizona) is leading the decathlon with 4,098 points.

The second and final day of the combined events championships is Sunday.

Some members of the throwing squad competed at the Air Force Twilight Open to tune up before the rest of the Pac-12 Championship next weekend (May 16-17). Senior Alex Kizirian led the Buffs, winning the hammer throw with a toss of 208-5.50. He was also fourth in the shot put (49-4.50). Junior Brady Rutt recorded a runner-up finish in the discus, launching the implement 170-11. He also placed third in the hammer throw (179-1.50).

The women were led by freshman Mariah Walker, who placed second in the shot put with 46-2.75 mark, and was fourth in the discus (143-0). Senior Kellie Lind placed third in the hammer throw (162-4) and Makenzie Kline was fourth in the javelin (100-0.25).
