SKILLMAN, N.J. - University of Colorado May 2015 graduate Julyette Steur and sophomore-to-be Tina Bokhua earned post-season Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regional awards, announced this week by the governing body of collegiate tennis.
The Buffaloes, who hail in the Mountain Region and sported a 7-1 record in the region this past spring season were represented on two of the seven regional honors. Bokhua was named Rookie of the Year, and Steur, the Cissie Leary Award of Sportsmanship recipient.
Bokhua is the fifth CU regional Rookie of the Year since 2004. She joins Dhany Quevedo (2013), Julyette Steur (2012), Monica Milewski (2006) and Lynzee Kever (2004).
The freshman from Moscow, Russia played the majority of her initial spring season at the top singles position, collecting seven victories, with five of them against mountain region competition. Overall, Bokhua went 7-2 in the region this past season.
Steur is the fourth CU women's tennis player to be named the regional Cissie Leary Award of Sportsmanship winner.
The ITA/Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship is awarded to a Division I women's player who displays inspiring dedication and commitment to her team, which has enhanced her team's performance and exemplified the spirit of college tennis. It dates back to 1997 and is memory of the late and widely admired Penn women's tennis coach Cissie Leary.
Steur joins former CU standouts Winde Janssens (2013), Gleisy Torres Torres (2007) and Kendra Strandemo (2005).
It's the fifth postseason honor for Steur, the 19-year-old graduate from Apeldoorn, The Netherlands, who was named the team's most valuable player, co-most improved and the sports performer of the year at the team's tennis banquet on May 3. She was also named one of six CU student-athletes last month as a 2014-15 Scholar-Athlete Award winner (accumulated highest cumulative GPA in her respective class).
