Buffs Move Up To 14th After Two Rounds At Stanford

October 15, 2016 | Women's Golf

STANFORD, Calif. – Senior Esther Lee and junior Brittany Fan rebounded from tough Friday performances to help Colorado move up one spot to 14th after two rounds of the Stanford Intercollegiate on Saturday at the Stanford Golf Course.

Lee, the top ranked golfer in the nation, shot an even par 71 for Colorado's low score of the round, and in the process moved up 32 spots and into a tie for 18th at 5-over. Fan shaved six strokes of her Friday round by shooting 2-over 73 on Saturday and sits in 45th.

Freshman Kirsty Hodgkins matched Fan with a 73 and remains the Buffaloes' top individual for the tournament, tied for fifth overall at 1-over.

WHAT HAPPENED: The No. 38 ranked Buffaloes shot a 16-over 300 on the day, four strokes better than Friday's first round. That score tied for the 10th best of the round as all 18 teams in the field shot over par for the second-straight day on the 6,130-yard course.

While Colorado's top three shot 4-over, the Buffaloes couldn't get that fourth low score to make a bigger jump up the leaderboard. Freshman Robyn Choi, in just her fifth collegiate round, shot a 12-over par 83 counting toward Colorado's overall team score.

TOURNAMENT FIELD: No. 8 UCLA had the best round of the day at 1-over to take over the invitational lead after two rounds at 4-over, 572. The Bruins will have a 11-stroke cushion heading into Sunday's final round. Host and second-ranked Stanford is in second place at 15-over 583, followed by California (589, +21) and USC and Florida (both at 590, +22).

No. 17 Northwestern, the leader after Friday's first round, had a rough day finishing at 23-over and dropping to eighth place.

Colorado, at 36-over 604 is just one shot behind Pepperdine and San Diego State tied for 12th at 603. The Buffaloes are just seven shots out of the top 10 heading into the final 18 holes Sunday.

KIRSTY HODGKINS (70-73—143, +1): Hodgkins shot a 2-over 73 and is in a three-way tie for fifth at 1-over 143 through 36 holes. Despite dropping three strokes from Friday, she only dipped one place on the individual leaderboard. She is eight strokes out of the lead, but only three out of second place. Hodgkins picked up two birdies early in the round, both on par 3's at No. 14 and No. 17. Starting on the No. 10 tee for the second-straight day, she played the back nine even before going 2-over on the front.

ESTHER LEE (76-71—147, +5): Lee had the team's best score of the day at even par, allowing her to climb from 50th to 18th place. She had a team best four birdies on the round, including three in a four-hole stretch. Lee started with a birdie on the 165-yard par 3 17th. After parring 18 and making the turn, she put in back-to-back red numbers on the 495-yard par 5 No. 1 and the 423-yard par 4 No. 2. Lee was as low as 2-under at that point in the round, but a double bogey 6 on No. 6 put her back at even for the round.

BRITTANY FAN (79-73—152, +10): Fan had her best round since the season-opening Dick McGuire Invitational with a 2-over 73. She had a pair of birdies, first on the 473-yard par 5 No. 12 to put her at 1-under through three holes. On the front nine Fan birdied the course's longest hole, the 495-yard par 5 No. 1. Fan, who had 12 pars, had her best round since shooting a 73 in the final round of the Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque.

GILLIAN VANCE (79-88—167, +25): Vance had Colorado's high round of the day with a 17-over 88 to fall into a tie for 87th place. She was at 1-over after three holes, but carded two straight bogeys and a triple on the 15th.

ROBYN CHOI (84-83—167, +25): In just her second collegiate tournament, Choi is tied for 87th after logging a 12-over 83. Choi bogeyed on four of her first five holes before logging three straight pars.

TOP INDIVIDUALS: UCLA's Bronte Law scored a tournament-low 6-under 65 to open up a five stroke lead at 7-under 135 after round two. Stanford's Andrea Lee and round one leader, San Diego State's Georgia Lacey, are tied for second at 2-under. Casey Danielson of Stanford is fourth at 1-under. Hodgkins is tied with UCLA's Lilia Vu and USC's Victoria Morgan at 1-over after 36 holes.

NOTEWORTHY: The Stanford Intercollegiate features 13 teams in the top 50 of GolfStat's early fall national rankings. Colorado improved slightly on par 4's from day one, but still ranks last in the field at 63-over with an average score of 4.7. The Buffaloes continue to attack the par 5's at 8-under, ranking fourth in the field, with an average score of 4.8. Hodgkins is second in the field in par 3's at 3-under. Lee is tied with a large pack of players for second on the par 5's at 4-under. Lee is also tied for third in the field with seven total birdies.

QUOTABLE: Head coach Anne Kelly: "Overall a better day today. Esther, Brittany and Kirsty played pretty well. Unfortunately, this round we just didn't have a fourth score that helped. But I think everybody is on the verge of playing well and we should have a better day tomorrow, hopefully if the weather cooperates and we can play."

ON BRITTANY FAN: "Today was one of Brittany's better rounds of the semester; she's been working hard and I think it's coming together for her. She struggled with the putter a little bit but I think she will get that going very soon."

ON KIRSTY HODGKINS: "She was very steady today. It was a tough day overall, normally there are several teams under par at this tournament but the course is playing long it's wet and there were tough (pin) locations today. It was also fairly breezy. I think Kirsty who's been battling illness, is doing a great job of managing her game."

ON GILLIAN VANCE & ROBYN CHOI: "I know Gillian and Robyn were both very disappointed with their performance today and I expect them to come back stronger tomorrow. They are very competitive young ladies and they are not satisfied with their play. But they are both very capable of scoring much better. Esther as well was not satisfied as she had two double bogies today - that is not normal for her."

NEXT UP: Colorado will pair up with San Jose State and San Diego State Saturday in the third and final round of the 54-hole tournament. The Buffaloes will begin off the No. 10 tee for the third straight day and will tee off at 9:15 a.m. MT.
