KAILUA KONA, Hawai'i – Colorado is in ninth place after the first 36 holes of the 2016 Pac-12 Preview at the 6,372-yard, par 73 Nanea Golf Club.
Â
The freshman duo of Robyn Choi and Kirsty Hodgkins led the way for the Buffaloes. Choi had two of the stronger rounds in her young career, fielding a team-low 4-over for the day. Hodgkins, Colorado's low scorer in the previous two fall tournaments, was one stroke behind at 5-over.
WHAT HAPPENED: The No. 45 ranked Buffaloes shot a 31-over, 615 for the first two rounds, sitting just three strokes back of seventh as top-ranked UCLA and No. 26 California are both at 28-over.
Â
Colorado was tied for sixth after 18 holes after logging a 10-over, 302, but fell off that pace quickly in round two, as did most of the field. The Buffaloes added another 10 strokes over par before completing the first nine holes of the second round.
Â
Colorado made a good run toward the tail-end of the day. The Buffaloes had seven their nine birdies which counted toward the team score in that round down the stretch, staying right in the range of mid-20s over par before completing the day at 31-over.
Â
Eight of the 11 teams in the field were in double-digits over par for the final 18 holes.
Â
TOURNAMENT FIELD: No. 3 ranked Stanford has a two stroke lead over No. 20 Arizona State and No. 30 Arizona after 36 holes. Those three teams hold a sizable lead over the rest of the pack as fourth-place Oregon State sits at 21-over, 11 shots back of the Arizona schools.
Â
The Wildcats had the best overall team round of the day, shooting a 6-under 286 in the first round, but fell back plus-16 over the final 18 holes.
ROBYN CHOI (74-76—150, +4): After struggling at last week's Stanford Intercollegiate, carding two rounds in the 80s, Choi bounced back to record Colorado's best two-round total, ending the day in a tie for 16th place overall. Choi had the Buffaloes' overall low score for the day in the first round with a 1-over 74. She birdied the 464-yard par 5 13th to move to 1-under and stayed in the red for four straight holes before a bogey on 18. Choi grabbed another birdie on the 462-yard No. 6 to climb back to even before finishing out at 1-over. Choi had her best run of the day late in round two. After playing the back nine at 3-over, she climbed back to even par for the round shooting 3-under over the next six with birdies at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6. However, a bogey at No. 7 and double-bogey at No. 8 put her back at 3-over to close out her day.
Â
KIRSTY HODGKINS (75-76—151, +5): Hodgkins sits just outside the top 20 after two rounds, in a tie for 21st at 5-over. She finished the day strong, shooting 2-under over her final five holes, logging three birdies in that span, including back-to-back on No. 5 and No. 6. Hodgkins shot a 2-over 75 in the first round, rebounding from a slow start to pick up the Buffaloes' second-best score. She fell to 4-over after shooting bogey on four of her first six holes, but started her climb up with a birdie on 13. Hodgkins made par on seven-straight holes, and 8-of-9 overall, before finishing even stronger with back-to-back birdies on the short 294-yard par 4 No. 5 and the long 462-yard par 5 No. 6.
GILLIAN VANCE (76-80—156, +10): Vance is tied for 35th after a 10-under, 36-hole total of 156. Vance shot a 3-over 76 in the first round. She played even through her first five holes with five-straight pars, but dropped two with bogeys at No. 16 and No. 16. Vance responded immediately though with back-to-back birdies, first on the longest hole of the course, the 536-yard No. 18 and then again on the par 3 No. 1. She flirted with Colorado's low score of the round as she was even par through 15 holes, but suffered a double-bogey 6 on No. 7, and ended the round at 3-over.
Â
BRITTANY FAN (77-81—158, +12): Fan finished her 36 holes with a 12-over 158, tying for 43rd place overall. She shot an 81 in the second round, falling to 5-over in the first five holes. She picked up a birdie on the 191-yard par 3 No. 17 and parred six of her final seven holes. Fan logged a 4-over 77 in her first round. Despite a birdie on her second hole, the par 4 No. 10, she was 3-over after her first four holes. Fan recovered with a birdie on No. 13 and then parred five straight before climbing to 1-over with her third birdie of the round, on the par 4 No. 1. She stayed at 1-over for the next four holes before logging bogeys on three straight to end her round.
Â
ESTHER LEE (78-82—160, +14): Lee is in 49th place after 36 holes, shooting a 14-over 160. She scored nine holes on the plus side and logged one red number, a birdie on the par 5 No. 4. Lee shot a 5-over 78 in the first round. She made par on 7-of-10 holes to begin the round, but dropped to 4-under with a double-bogey 6 on No. 14 and a bogey on No. 15. Lee had a better front nine, scoring birdies on No. 3 and No. 6 to finish at 5-over.
Â
TORI GLENN (82-84—166, +20): Playing as an individual, Glenn shot 20-over for a 63rd place showing through 36 holes. The first was her better round with a 9-over 82 that included her lone birdie of the day, on the 294-yard par 4 No. 5. She was 1-over after six holes, but carded a triple-bogey on No. 7, finishing 5-over on the front nine..
TOP INDIVIDUALS: Three players sit atop the leaderboard at the Pac-12 Preview after 36 holes. Oregon's Kathleen Scavo Arizona's Gigi Stoll and USC's Robynn Ree are tied for the tournament lead at 3-under. Stanford's Casey Danielson is one back at 2-under. Danielson was the leader after round one with the low score of the day at 68, but fell back with a 3-over round two. UCLA's Bethany Wu recorded the only other sub-par 36-holes and sits in fifth at 1-under.
NOTEWORTHY: Choi's 74 in round one was her second-lowest in seven collegiate rounds. She shot a 72 in the first round of the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational...Lee's two rounds did not count toward team scoring, her first two such rounds as a Buffalo. She had entered the tournament a perfect 66-for-66 in her rounds counting toward the team score. Colorado is playing its first par 73 course since it's last trip to the Nanea Golf Club in last October's Pac-12 Fall Preview. In that tournament, the Buffaloes rallied with a 1-under 291 on the final day to finish fourth.
QUOTABLE: Head coach Anne Kelly: "Tough day especially the seconnd round. We just need to get everyone going at the same time. Conditions were very tough in the second round; winds picked up. Esther had a very unusual tough day. Robyn showed some good progress and Gillian did a lot of good things. Overall we are extremely frustrated and disappointed play today, but everyone seems very determined to make a comeback tomorrow."
NEXT UP: Colorado will pair up with Washington, Hawai'i and a handful of individuals for Tuesday's final round which tees off with a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m. MT. The Buffaloes will start off between holes No. 11-15.
