CU’s Preseason Training Continues; Program Receives Gift to Benefit Women’s Nordic Team

BOULDER – The University of Colorado ski program will be competing this week in an International Ski Federation (FIS) race held at Copper Mountain Resort, providing the Buffs with quality and needed alpine competition as they continue their preseason preparations.

"It's our first opportunity to face our intercollegiate competition from Utah, (Denver University) and New Mexico locally right here," CU head coach Richard Rokos said. "These little opportunities right now to train together and compete together will be very beneficial for us in terms of preparation."

The CU men's and women's alpine team will race in the giant slalom Wednesday and Thursday. Results from the races will be made available at www.fis-ski.com.

"We'll get a scope on our depth and ability before we go to the first races (at the start of the season in January) because we will compete against our future intercollegiate opponents in these FIS races," Rokos said.

Prior to this weekend, the Buffaloes have been training hard for the upcoming season. Both the Nordic and alpine teams took advantage of the Thanksgiving break with no classes by heading off to train.

"Our preparation and training is going really well," Rokos said. "Our injured people are recovering, healthy people are skiing fast and very well, so we are looking forward to the upcoming season."

For the women's Nordic team, who went up to West Yellowstone over the Thanksgiving break, their travel there was made possible by a new sprinter van the program purchased off of funds raised from this year's Ski Ball.

The 2016 Ski Ball, held back on Oct. 14, celebrated the women's skiing heritage at CU and the funds raised from the event were used to benefit the women's program with the purchase of the sprinter van being a big boon to make travel easier, safer and more comfortable for the student-athletes. The sprinter van also assists in the time the student-athletes spend away from Boulder, as it is equipped with Wi-Fi so they can study while they travel to train and compete.

Up at West Yellowstone, the Nordic squads competed at the Rendezvous Ski Trails on Friday and Saturday in a FIS race. Notable results from their competition there include podium finishes from Petra Hyncicova (second place in the women's 5k on Friday), Mads Stroem (third place in the men's 10k on Friday), as well as Jesse Knori placing fourth in the women's 5k race Saturday and Petter Reistad finishing seventh in Saturday's 10k race.

Other CU Nordic results include Christina Rolandsen finishing in eighth and seventh place, respectively, in Friday and Saturday's 5k races, Anne Siri Lervik finishing 12th Friday, and Buffalo alum Matt Gelso finishing second in the men's 10k race on Saturday.

The alpine teams spent Thanksgiving break up in Copper Mountain training on the well-prepared surface and trails that they are competing on this week during the FIS race.
