Colorado Puts Up Most Points In 22 Years In 112-54 Rout Of SLU
November 30, 2016 | Women's Basketball
BOULDER – No. 21 Colorado Buffaloes women's basketball team extended its season record to 7-0 today with a 112-54 win over the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions (2-4), scoring the most points in 22 years.
The 112 points on the board were the fifth-most ever and the most points since a 114-52 win over St. Francis (Pa.) in 1994 and it was the Buffs first game over 100 points since a 100-71 win over Cal Fullerton in 2005.
The Buffs are rolling with confidence, undefeated on the season under new head coach JR Payne. Next they look to continue this streak on Saturday night when they take on Idaho State at Coors Events Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED: A slow start led way to quick scoring by the Buffs. Haley Smith, Ariana Freeman and Zoe Correal teamed up defensively to give the offense opportunities they needed to find momentum scoring from the paint. Correal and Kennedy Leonard led the first quarter charge, combining for 14 points and nine rebounds.
Up 22-12 and a comfortable ten-point lead the Buffs kept rolling offensively. Smith came out hot in the second quarter, finding her range with a quick jumper then two back-to-back threes. A jumper by Makenzie Ellis gave the Buffs their largest lead of the first half by 30.
They came out of the locker room up 52-23 and never skipped a beat offensively. They rolled with confidence shooting a total of 64 points inside the paint and 51.1 percent from the field for the game.
"I think confidence is the biggest thing for us," Coach Payne said. "We're confident on the defensive side of the ball and offensively – sometimes we take quick shots but I love the way we're shooting it like we're going to score it every time."
The numbers from this game were outstanding. Defensively, the team totaled 65 rebounds and 38 turnovers. Buffs saw their largest lead of 60 points up 112-52 before the Lady Lions hit a jumper in the final seconds of the game.
Before the fourth quarter began, CU saw points scored by every player on the floor. By the end seven players scored in double-figures. Freeman and Leonard led the charge with 19 points apiece. Alexis Robinson was just behind with 11 points while Ellis, Smith and Brecca Thomas all had 10 points apiece.
"There's not too many games where you can have that many people in double figures, that many people playing 20 plus minutes," Payne said. "That to me is the biggest thing, that everyone played significant minutes and we were able to try different lineups and different things offensively."
TURNING POINT: Occurred during the first quarter. Buffs got down 3-0 after the Lady Lions sunk a three in the first possession. Fouls by the Lady Lions got the Buffs to the line and they got on the board. After a crucial offensive rebound by Zoe Beard-Fails, Smith found Robinson with the assist and Robinson sunk a three to put CU up 5-3. The Buffs never lost the lead the rest of the day.
CU STANDOUTS: Correal saw her second double-double of her career today (11 points and 11 rebounds). … Robinson was just shy of a double-double with eight rebounds and 11 points. … Freeman had her best shooting game putting up 19 points along with six rebounds and four assists ... in addition to scoring 10 points, Thomas had five assists.
KEY STATISTICS: Buffs shot a low 39.1 percent in the first quarter but after some offensive struggles, the Buffs came out hot in the second half shooting 61.1 percent from the field. … All 11 players that dressed today put points up on the board. … As a team, they totaled 65 rebounds, 51 points off the bench, 38 turnovers and a school-record 16 blocks.

The +58 margin of victory is tied for 11th-best and also the largest since the St. Francis game in 1994 ... CU tied the school record for most blocked shots (vs. Sam Houston State, Dec. 14, 2000) ... the +35 rebounding margin was the highest in CU history since +46 (80-34) against Pacific Christian on Nov. 18, 1981 ... QUOTEWORTHY: "Obviously this was a great win. You love games that everyone gets to play and contributes and everyone comes in and does a great job on the glass or defensively or whatever. I just feel that this was a really great opportunity for us to have everyone play significant minutes and every single player that played contributed which is great." - CU's head coach JR Payne on win
"We feel more positive, that's the best way to put it. We know we can do these things and being able to complete games and do well is really helping our confidence. Even when we have the negatives like missing a shot or a rebound, we know that we can get back to that level. In that positivity we can lift not only ourselves up but also each other." - CU's Zoe Correal on how this season is different than last season's team
"It's really great for us. We have basically the same team minus Jamee Swan and what we are lacking last year that we have this year is our confidence. Getting off to a 7-0 start is incredible for us." – CU's Ariana Freeman on team confidence
WHAT IT MEANS: The Buffs extend their season record to 7-0 and are ranked for the first time in two seasons. They currently are just one of three Pac-12 schools undefeated (California 6-0 and Utah 6-0). Currently the teams remaining on their non-conference schedule are unranked and the Buffs will be playing three of their remaining four non-conference games at home. The chance of going into Pac-12 play 11-0 remains a possibility as we see this team continuing to learn from its mistakes and improve each game as the confidence stretches across both sides of the ball.
NEXT UP: The Buffs continue their homestead on Saturday at 6 p.m. against the Idaho State Bengals (2-3) at Coors Events Center. The game will be streamed live on Pac-12 Plus.
