Buffs Wrap Up Successful Husky Classic
February 13, 2016 | Track and Field
SEATTLE — University of Colorado freshman Elissa Mann became the third fastest CU women's 800-meter performer on Saturday, clocking in at 2:09.73 at the Husky Classic.
Mann, who has only raced twice in uniform for the Buffs, improved on her 2:12.64 personal best from three weeks ago at the Air Force Invitational (1/23). The only CU women who have ever run faster than Mann are Mary (Decker) Slaney, who owns the record at 2:05.29 from 1978, and Elizabeth Tremblay (2:07.18), who ran her PR in 2013.
Senior Connor Winter also had an outstanding race, becoming just the third Buffalo to ever break the four-minute mark in the mile. Winter, whose previous PR had been 4:01.69, finished second in the fifth section (seventh overall) with a 3:59.76 time. The only other two Buffs that have raced under four minutes are Jake Hurysz (3:58.13, 2015) and Stephen Pifer (3:59.55, 2006).
Winter wasn't the only Buff who did well in the mile as sophomore Zach Perrin recorded a time of 4:02.89 to put him seventh on CU's all-time list. His time was 16th overall, sixth in the heat.
The women saw success in the mile as well and were led by freshman Dani Jones. Running in her first track race for the Buffs, Jones recorded a 4:38.68 time to enter CU's all-time chart at third behind two Olympians: Jenny (Barringer) Simpson (4:25.91, 2009) and Emma Coburn (4:29.86, 2013). Jones earned a sixth place finish in the heat and ended up seventh overall.
Another freshman, Tabor Scholl, also had a big race, finishing the mile in 4:39.70 to put her fourth all-time at CU. The time was the 10th best overall mark of the day.
Not to be outdone by the ladies, Joe Klecker and John Dressel, true freshmen, performed very well in the 3,000. Klecker was running his first race in a CU uniform and made it one to remember, finishing in 7:59.77. The time was 17th overall at the meet, fourth in the heat. Finishing right behind Klecker was Dressel, who clocked in at 8:00.05 for 18th (fifth in the section).
The women also performed well in the field events. Senior Sophie Hallam-Eames recorded a 10th place finish in the weight throw (57-6.50), while sophomore Mariah Walker was 10th in the shot put (46-4.75).
The Buffs will be back in action next weekend at the Rocky Mountain Classic in Laramie, Wyo. and the Joe Davies Open in Golden, Colo.
