Golfers Open In Third At Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate

February 19, 2016 | Men's Golf

PALM DESERT, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team stands in third place thanks to placing four scorers in the top 20 as the first round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate was completed here Friday.

No. 46 Kansas turned in the lone score under par, tallying a 3-under 285, with No. 51 TCU in at an even-par 288.  The Buffaloes, ranked 69th, recorded a 1-over 289, with No. 36 Texas Tech fourth with a 3-over 291.  Cal Poly rounded out the top five with a 295.

CU and Kansas were the only schools to have four players in the top 20 through 18 holes, as low scores were a precious commodity Friday: only five scores in the 60s were recorded, with 11 total under par and 18 at par or better as the average score in the 116-man field was 76.45.

Junior Jeremy Paul, CU's stroke average leader (70.75), recorded his team-best 11th subpar round of the season in firing a 1-under 71 on the 7,322-yard, par-72 Classic Club course layout.  That has him tied for ninth as he scored a team-high five birdies with nine pars against four bogeys.  The 71 was also his 43rd subpar career round, adding to his school record.  After back-to-back birdies on his fifth and sixth holes (Nos. 14 and 15, CU started on No. 10), he was in red numbers the rest of the round.

Senior Philip Juel-Berg turned in an even-par 72 to tie for 12th, as he scored three birdies and 13 pars with a bogey and double on his day.  He was 2-over at the turn but birdies on Nos. 3 and 4 brought him back to even and his finished out his round with five consecutive pars.   It was the 24th career round where he scored even par, second-most in CU annals.

Freshmen Wilson Belk and Ross Macdonald both carded 1-over 73s, tying the pair for 19th.  Each had similar rounds, with Belk scoring three birdies and 12 pars (against two birdies and a double), while Macdonald had two birdies and 13 pars and three bogeys.   Belk had a stretch early on with three birdies in four holes and had it 2-under at one point before playing his last 11 holes at 3-over; Macdonald spent the entire round within one stroke on either side of par.

Junior Ethan Freeman had one of those days where nothing seemed to go right from the start.  He has some early three putts and then had some troubles off tee, and when all was said and done, recorded a 14-over 86, the second-highest score in his career that has spanned 72 rounds.  He had seven pars, nine bogeys, a double and a triple, the latter just his second of the season, in standing in 114th place.

Sophomore John Souza and freshman Pierce Aichinger are competing here as individuals, meaning their scores do not count toward CU's overall team total.  Souza turned in a 4-over 76, tying him for 50th overall but for fifth among 16 players competing here individually in almost their own mini-tournament.  He had two birdies, including one on his final hole (No. 9), 12 pars, two bogeys and a pair of doubles; Aichinger had a bit of a rough day, finishing up with a 10-over 82 to tie for 101st (12th among the solo group).  He had 11 pars with four birdies and three doubles.

“Overall we are pleased with the round,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said. “Jeremy had a nice round and Philip did a good job of hanging in and posting a good score.  Wilson and Ross were similar and did a good job of getting rounds in the clubhouse.  Ethan had a rare off day, and we expect him to put today's round behind him and be ready to go the last two days.”

Colorado, usually near the top of the field in par-5 scoring was next-to-last, playing the four long ones collectively at 3-over for the round; but the Buffs were second in par-4 scoring (4-over), trailing only Texas Tech (+1).

TCU's Sarosh Adi is the individual leader through 18 holes, carding the day's best score with a 5-under 67.

The second round of the tournament is set for Saturday morning with the final round slated for Sunday.  The Buffaloes will tee off on No. 1 between 9:10 and 9:50 a.m. MST and will be paired with Kansas, TCU and Texas Tech.
