Rutt Leads Buffs At Rocky Mountain Classic

LARAMIE, Wyo. — University of Colorado senior Brady Rutt recorded a huge personal record on Friday to win the weight throw at the Rocky Mountain Classic.
Rutt's mark of 61-11, his third throw this season over 60 feet, was almost two feet further than his previous best of 60-2, which he set Feb. 12 at the Husky Classic in Seattle. The toss also pushed Rutt up one spot on CU's all-time performers list, improving to third overall as he passed Jeff Singleton, who threw 60-5 in 1997.
Sophomore Grayson Webber had a nice night as he competed in the shot put and weight throw. Webber was eighth in the weight throw with a PR of 50-5.50 and was ninth in the shot put (43-6).
Sophomore Matthew Denton also had a good showing in the weight throw, placing 10th with a mark of 48-10.75, which was an inch from his personal best. Christian Shaver, a linebacker on the CU football team who is training with the throwers this spring, competed for the track and field team for the first time. He placed 10th in the shot put (42-1.25) and was 11th in the weight throw (33-10.25).
The women also had some great performances at the Rocky Mountain Classic. Sophomore Mariah Walker won the shot put, launching a toss of 46-11.50, while freshman Elisa Grandemange was second (27-7.50).
In the weight throw, senior Sophie Hallam-Eames tallied a second place finish with a mark of 58-00.50. Walker took fourth overall with a 55-2.75 PR and Grandemange was seventh with a personal best of 50-10.75. Freshman Delaney Hall also had a top-10 finish with a PR throw of 41-1.50.
There was also a small group of CU athletes competing at the Joe Davies Open in Golden, Colo. Sophomore Andrew Ghizzone led the way for the Buffs as he tied for second in the pole vault after clearing 15-11.25, which was just half an inch below his personal best (15-11.75).
Isaiah Oliver, another freshman from the CU football team, made his track and field debut in the long jump, placing fourth overall after jumping 23-6.25, which tied for ninth on CU's all-time performers list. Freshman Dionne Taylor Jr. was sixth in long jump with a 21-11 mark
Freshman Maja Wichart-Donzo had a PR in the long jump, leaping 18-2.25 for eighth place. She was joined in the long jump by teammates Michaela Wenning, who placed 15th (16-10.50) and Lauren Sharpe, who was 22nd (16-4.25).
Colorado will conclude action on Saturday at the Joe Davies Open.
