Buffs Finish Successful Joe Davies Open

February 20, 2016 | Track and Field

GOLDEN, Colo. — University of Colorado freshman Maja Wichhart-Donzo won the triple jump at the Joe Davies Open on Saturday, leading the way to a great day for the Buffs.

Wichhart-Donzo recorded a personal best mark of 40-2.75, jumping almost two feet farther then the second place finisher, Cyinna Booker (Azusa Pacific), who recorded a 38-6 jump.  The mark moves Wichhart-Donzo into second place on CU's all-time performers list, replacing Udie Ekiko's jump of 40-0.5 (1994).

Sophomore Rajon O'Quinn had a great day as well, winning the 60-meter dash and the high jump.  O'Quinn gave the Buffs her first win of the day in the 60, setting a PR of 7.69 seconds.  The time moves O'Quinn into sixth overall on the CU all-time performers list, replacing Mandi Farquhar's time (7.73) set in 1997.

In the high jump, O'Quinn cleared 5-7 for her second win of the day, while senior Kelsey English came in second with a mark of 5-5.

For the men, freshman Duane McClurkin Jr. racked up another win in the high jump, finishing with the top jump of 6-8.75.  Sophomore Mason Chronowski placed third (6-6.75) and freshman Dionne Taylor Jr. was fourth (6-4.75). In the men's open 60, McClurkin Jr. provided the Buffs with another top five finish, coming in fifth with a PR of 7.01.

In 60-meter hurdles, freshmen Alex Billing and Isaiah Oliver finished first and second, respectively, to set the pace for a race dominated by the Buffs. Billing improved on his third place finish in the preliminaries (8.43), to win the finals with a time of 8.28.  Oliver, who was running his first track race for the Buffs, won the prelim in 8.38 seconds and then bettered that time in the finals, finishing second overall with a time of 8.31 seconds.

Rounding out CU's dominance in the 60-hurdles, sophomore Andrew Ghizzone finished fourth (8.59) and sophomore Isaiah Kaiser placed fifth with a PR (8.70).

The women also had qualifiers in the 60-hurdles final. Senior Abrinna Torres finished fourth (8.96) and Wichhart-Donzo set a PR, finishing fifth (9.00).

Torres had a solid showing in the shot put too, placing third with throw of 42-11.75.  Also recording a top ten finish for the Buffs was sophomore Michaela Wenning, who tallied a seventh place mark of 32-10.25.

Next up, the Buffs will head to Seattle next for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track & Field Championships, Feb. 26-27, at Dempsey Indoor on the campus of the University of Washington.
