Orme?o Ruiz Wins In CU's Loss at Washington State

March 20, 2016 | Tennis

PULLMAN, Wash. - Colorado's tennis team suffered its second straight loss on Sunday, losing 6-1 at Washington State in Pullman, Wash. CU fell to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in the Pac-12, while WSU improved to 16-4 and 2-3 in Pac-12 play.

"Washington State is a good team, always a never-say-die team," head coach Nicole Kenneally said. "They do a great job of fighting right until the end. Today we had a few players dealing with some personal adversity. A couple of them did a great job of overcoming that and fighting really hard. We've got to keep working on closing and working on our basics and doing what we do well, and converting on our opportunities."

CU dropped the doubles point for the fourth consecutive match, falling 6-3 at No. 2 and 6-3 at No. 1.

The Buffaloes were much more competitive in singles play. Nuria Ormeño Ruiz won the first set 6-3 at No. 1 singles and battled for a 7-5 win in the third set after splitting the first two sets. Her match was the last to finish, keeping CU from being shut out. With the win, she moved to 20-7 overall this season, including 5-2 since taking over the No. 1 position in the lineup.

"Nuria played a solid first set," Kenneally said. "She changed her game plan a bit in the second and it wasn't as successful and she came back in the third and was down a match point and then closed it out 7-5. It definitely was a good victory for her, a good lesson in persistence."

Annabelle Andrinopoulos battled to a tiebreaker in the first set at No. 4 singles before being edged 7-6. Andrinopoulos, Kyra Wojcik and Brigitte Beck all ended up falling in straight sets as WSU clinched the match with the bottom three positions in the singles lineup. Jeannez Daniel and Alex Aiello both lost in three sets at No. 2 and No. 3.

Colorado continues a four-match road trip in the Bay Area next weekend, facing Stanford and California on Friday and Saturday.
