Ghizzone Finishes 10th At Texas Relays

April 01, 2016 | Track and Field

AUSTIN, Texas – Sitting in 16th place entering the final day of the decathlon, University of Colorado sophomore Andrew Ghizzone climbed six spots to finish tenth, and in the process, recorded the eighth best performance in CU history with a personal record of 6,845 points on Thursday at the Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.

Ghizzone started his day off early, but successfully, finishing tenth in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.32 seconds.  Next up was the discus throw where he turned in his second top 15 performance of the day, finishing 12th with a distance of 107-11.

Ghizzone was still 16th through seven events, but next up was one of his best events, the pole vault, and a chance to make a significant jump in the standings.  He answered the call and set a personal record after clearing 16-0.75, which was second in the competition, as well as in CU decathlon history. That great finish pushed him up two spots to 14th with two events remaining and a top ten finish in his sights.

The javelin throw was next and Ghizzone was able to toss a mark of 140-3, achieving yet another top 15 finish (13th).

The final event was the 1,500-meter race and Ghizzone needed a strong finish to crack the top ten in the standings. And that is exactly what he delivered, finishing second with a time of 4:31.82, which vaulted Ghizzone the final three spots he needed to crack the top ten and finish his first decathlon of the season on a very high note.

On the women's side, senior Abrianna Torres finished her heptathlon competition, coming in 17th place with a total score of 5,160 points. She began the day with three events left, starting with the long jump where she looked to make her way up the standings.

Torres helped herself immensely by finishing 11th with a solid jump of 18-11.75 and that jump alone moved her up four spots to 20th overall heading into the final two events.

Torres next stepped up for the javelin throw and was able to record a mark of 123-8, good enough for 12th place. The 800 was the final event for her and she finished in 2:29.74, which was 21st overall.

Open track events also started on Thursday at Texas Relays, and the Buffs had a couple sprinters in action. Junior Jaron Thomas placed 47th in the 400-meter hurdles (54.02) and freshman Gabby Scott was 64th in the women's 400-hurdles (1:06.25).

Continuing on Friday at the Texas Relays, the Buffs will have men competing in preliminaries for the 110-meter hurdles and the 100-meters.  The women will compete in prelims of the 100-meters and will race the relays. Several members of CU's distance team will also be competing at the Stanford Invite on Friday.
