Buffs Look Sharp At Tom Benich Invite
April 03, 2016 | Track and Field
GREELEY, Colo. – The weather in Colorado was finally perfect on Saturday as members the University of Colorado track and field team had their first chance to impress at the Tom Benich Invitational.
Freshman Duane McClurkin Jr. raced to a first place finish in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 21.31 seconds. He also earned a runner-up placing in the 400, finishing with a 47.49 time. Another sprinter, sophomore Jaysean Skrine, earned a first place finish in the 100, clocking in at 10.88, and was the runner-up in the 200, finishing in 21.85.
In the field, senior Brady Rutt was first in the discus (169-1) and second in the hammer throw (195-4). His discus mark was just shy of his PR (170-11), while his mark in the hammer was a personal best.
The Buffs had five other athletes win an event. It only took freshman Maja Wichhart-Donzo three jumps (she passed on the final three) to win the triple jump. She recorded a mark of 39-00.25, which was over a foot further than the runner-up, University of Mary's Faith Kjelstrup (37-10.75), and put her fifth on CU's all-time performers list.
Senior Kelsey English cleared 5-7 to win the high jump and freshman Delaney Hall took home top honors in the javelin with a toss of 136-10. On the track, sophomore Rajon O'Quinn won the 400, clocking in at 56.04 and freshman Trenton Stringari raced to a time of 53.74 to win the 400-meter hurdles.
Second place finishes were also popular for Colorado on Saturday. Freshman Justice Ramos was the runner-up in the men's 800 (1:53.18), junior Garrett Losty was second in the 400-hurdles (54.57) and sophomore Mariah Walker was the runner-up in the shot put with a mark of 47-3.75.
The Buffs also had a quartet of third place finishes in the throws with sophomore Matthew Denton in the men's hammer (168-3), senior Sophie Hallam-Eames in the women's hammer (175-8), sophomore Grayson Webber in the men's discus (151-3) and Walker in the women's discus (150-3). On the track, freshman Joseph Martinez was third in the 110-hurdles (16.52).
The Buffs will host the Colorado Invitational next weekend, April 8-9, at Potts Field. This will be the only home meet of the season for CU as the Jerry Quiller Classic, which had been scheduled for March 18-19, was cancelled due to weather.
