Holland Leads Buffs In Record Setting meet

April 09, 2016 | Track and Field

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field team turned in a record setting day on Saturday at its own Colorado Invitational at Potts Field and were led by sophomore Ana Holland, whose first place finishing time of 11.63 in the 100-meter dash was the best performance in CU history.

“We had a good day, better than I was hoping for,” said head coach Mark Wetmore.  “We had good excellent weather until maybe the last hour and a half when it got a little breezy.  But it was a good day, good conditions and good performances.  Overall all day long we had some real good results.”

Overall members of the team finished first in 16 events and had ten other top three finishes on the day.

The women's 4x100-meter relay team of sophomores Holland, Tashay Brown and Alex Peters, along with senior Eileen Gehring also turned in a record setting performance, winning the race with a time of 44.98 which is the second fastest in CU history.

In the 200-meters, CU had another two women finish in the top three, as sophomore Rajon O'Quinn won the event running the race in 24.63.  Brown finished second (25.24) and freshman Maja Wichhart-Donzo finished fifth with a time of 25.52.

CU's women finished one through three in the 400-meters as well when Gehring took the win with a time of 54.25.  Peters finished second (54.97) and freshman Gabby Scott finished third (55.26). In the 100-meter hurdles, Wichhart-Donzo set a PR, finishing second while running the race in 14.41 and senior Abrianna Torres finished fourth with a time of 14.64.

Freshman Dani Jones gave the Buffs another win in the 800 with a solid time of 2:08.97, while senior Maddie Alm finished third setting a PR of 2:10.38.  Sophomore Eryn Blakely competed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing second with a time of 11:15.50.  Scott was second in the 400-hurdles, running 1:02.55 while setting a PR.

The men started off in the 1,500-meters as senior Morgan Pearson finished first with a solid time of 3:49.29 and senior Pierce Murphy finished fourth with a time of 3:52.92. Freshman Ethan Gonzales (8:43.74) and sophomore Christian Martin (8:47.25) finished second and third, respectively, in the 3,000-meters to give CU yet another pair of top three finishes.

In the 100, sophomore Jaysean Skrine set a PR, finishing first while running the race in 10.68.  Another PR came for freshman Abdiel Agramonte Moreno as he finished fifth with a time of 10.85.  CU continued to turn in great finishes as junior Jaron Thomas finished first in the 110-hurdles with a time of 14.24 and freshman Alexander Billing finished fourth setting a PR of 14.67.

The 800 saw the CU men finish one through three as sophomore Zach Perrin led the way with a PR and first place finish time of 1:49.85.  Junior Nick Harris finished second (1:51.33) and senior Connor Winter finished third in 1:51.91.

CU's men also finished one and two in the 400-hurdles as freshman Trenton Stringari finished first (52.81) and Thomas placed second, running the race in 53.11.  Sophomore Isaiah Kaiser also ran and finishing fourth (55.48).

In the 200, freshman Duane McClurkin Jr. won in 21.43, while junior Austin Mitsch finished second (21.55) to give the Buffs another one-two finish.  In the 400-meters, sophomore Darrin Haynes turned in a second place finish running the race in 48.11 setting a PR.

“The sprinters went to Texas last week and had a really tough weekend,” Wetmore said.  “So I'm sure they came back dragging their tails but they really rose up today, and they can hold their heads up after today's performances.”

In the field, CU's men and women turned in top performances across the board to continue the Buffs' record day.

Sophomore Mariah Walker won the shot put, throwing for a distance of 49-5.75 for a personal best and is the third best in CU history.  Senior Sophie Hallam-Eames also turned in a third best performance in CU history, finishing second in the hammer throw with a toss of 178-3.25.  Freshman Elisa Grandemange set a personal record in the hammer as well, finishing third with a mark of 176-6.75.  Walker turned in another top three finish in the discus throw, finishing second with a toss of 5-07.75 and Grandemange finished fourth with a distance of 143-11.50.

In the javelin, CU placed first and second as freshman Delaney Hall threw for a distance of 129-4.25, and Torres recorded a mark of 124-6.

O'Quinn finished first in the high jump after clearing 5-7.75, winning her second event on the day, and Torres placed second with the same mark, setting a PR.  Senior Kelsey English also cleared 5-7.75 to finish fourth.

For the men, McClurkin Jr. won his second event of the meet, winning the high jump with a height of 6-7.  Fellow freshman Dionne Taylor Jr. finished fifth, clearing 6-5.

Brady Rutt, a senior, finished first in the discus throw, setting a PR with a toss of 171-8 and sophomore Grayson Webber finished second shattering his previous PR by almost 12 feet with a toss of 163-2.5.  Rutt also finished third in the hammer throw with a mark of 193-0.5.

In the javelin, freshman Joseph Martinez finished second shattering his previous PR by almost eight feet, throwing for a distance of 160-0.25.  Sophomore Andrew Ghizzone finished fourth with a throw of 138-11.25. Ghizzone turned in a top five finish in the pole vault, coming in third after clearing a height of 15-09.00.

“We had so many good things happen that it's hard to focus on who was the best of the day,” Wetmore said.  “It's a real solid early April performance for us and now we start to head down to sea level and the big times, throws and jumps will start to come.”
