May 07, 2016 | Track and Field
U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Recently it seems that every time Ana Holland steps out on the track, she's sets a school record, and that is exactly what she did on Friday afternoon at the Air Force Twilight Open, clocking a time of 11.61 seconds to win the 100-meter dash.
The University of Colorado junior-to-be broke her own record of 11.63, which she set less than a month ago in Boulder at the CU Invitational on April 9 after breaking a 26-year-old-record (11.65). Holland also set CU's 200 record, 23.45, a couple of weeks ago at Mt. SAC Relays, breaking her old record of 23.54.
Holland was joined at the U.S. Air Force Academy by several of her teammates who were also taking advantage of getting in one more meet prior to the postseason. The meet paid off for many of them as the Buffs came away with numerous season and personals bests to move up the regional performance list.
Alex Peters raced her first 200 of the season, winning in 24.15, while Eileen Gehring, who was also running her first 200 of the campaign, took second overall with a time of 24.22. The Buffs also took the next two places with Tashay Brown (24.72) and Rajon O'Quinn (25.42) taking third and fourth, respectively. Gabby Scott won the women's 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 1:01.79 and O'Quinn as sixth (1:08.67) in her first attempt at the event.
Colorado excelled in the men's 400-hurdles, going 1-2-4-5. Jaron Thomas led the team with a 52.27 performance, while Trenton Stringari was second (53.48). Garrett Losty placed fourth (54.59) and Isaiah Kaiser was fifth (54.86). The Buffs also took top honors in the 110-hurdles with Alex Billing finishing in 14.57.
In the men's open sprints, Jaysean Skrine was second in the 100 (10.69) and Patrick Carr placed fourth (10.79), both finishing just .01 seconds off their season bests. Duane McClurkin Jr. was fourth in the 400, clocking in at 49.22.
The field events had many outstanding performances as well. Mariah Walker won the shot put with her third consecutive mark over 50 feet (50-5.50). She also recorded a pair of personal records as she placed second in the discus (157-5.25) and fifth in the hammer (148-9.75).
Sophie Hallam-Eames was third in the hammer to lead the Buffs with a PR of 179-7.50 and was fourth in the discus (144-3.75). Elisa Grangemange also placed high in those events as she was fourth in the hammer (177-9.75) and fifth in the discus (140-6). The women also had success in the javelin with Delaney Hall placing second with a PR of 142-1. She was seventh in the hammer (133-6.25).
Brady Rutt had a very nice day for the men, winning the hammer throw (191-4.25) and placing third in the discus with a 179-4.25 PR. Grayson Webber did well in those same events as he finished fifth in the discus (162-10.25) and took seventh in the hammer (150-4.25). Matthew Denton earned sixth in the hammer (161-8.50) and Paden Gatlin was seventh in the discus (150-4.25). Christian Shaver was the lone male in the javelin, placing sixth with a throw of 162-8.25.
CU's jumpers were led by Kelsey English who jumped a season best 5-10.50 to place second overall. O'Quinn was third after clearing 5-5. On the men's side, McClurkin Jr. was third in the high jump (6-4.75). Dionne Taylor Jr. led the Buffs in the long jump, placing second (22-8.50) and De'Jour Plunkett-Elliott was third in the triple jump (43-10.75).
The Pac-12 Championships officially get underway on Saturday, May 7, in Seattle. Only the combined events (heptathlon and decathlon) will be contested this Saturday and Sunday. All other events will be contested May 14-15.
