May 09, 2016 | Tennis

SKILLMAN, N.J. – Colorado tennis player Nuria Ormeño Ruiz earned the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award for the Mountain Region on Monday. She is the fifth Buffaloes player to earn the award in school history, joining Kendra Strandemo (2005), Gleisy Torres Torres (2007), Winde Janssens (2013) and Julyette Steur (2015).

The ITA Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award is given to a student-athlete "who displays inspiring dedication and commitment to her team, which has enhanced her team's performance and exemplified the spirit of college tennis. It dates back to 1997 and is in memory of the late and widely admired Penn women's tennis coach Cissie Leary," according to the ITA's website.

"Congrats to Nuria for being named the Cissy Leary Sportsmanship Award winner," head coach Nicole Kenneally said. "This award is selected by regional coaches so it is recognition of the reputation Nuria has earned through the coaching community, who are also her competitors. I am excited for Nuria to be moved forward as a national finalist as she is real deserving of this award. She is a great leader for our team on and off the court and makes her teammates better. Nuria is a fighter and she is very competitive, but at the same time is respectful of her opponents and demonstrates great sportsmanship."

A junior from Barcelona, Spain, Ormeño Ruiz led CU to one of its best seasons in recent history. She posted a 23-13 overall singles record, including 7-7 at the No. 1 singles position after moving into that spot halfway through the season. She also went 12-13 in doubles play, with a team-best six wins at the No. 1 doubles spot. Her 23 singles wins ranked 25th in Buffaloes single-season history.

It was a season to remember for Ormeño Ruiz as she became the first Colorado player ever to qualify for the National Indoor Championships after winning the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region championship during the fall season. She led CU to a 4-3 win over Arizona on March 13 when she upset 27th-ranked Lauren Marker in three sets. Overall, she had two match-clinching singles wins and four doubles-clinching wins. In singles competition, Ormeño Ruiz led CU in wins, No. 1-position wins, tournament wins (11), Pac-12 wins (4) and dual-match wins (12).

For her career, she enters her senior campaign 22nd in CU history in singles wins (61), 19th in winning percentage (.629) and 31st in combined singles and doubles wins (100).
