Two hook up for pair of touchdowns
BOULDER — Colorado quarterback Steven Montez and wide receiver Kabion Ento both had a day to remember Saturday against Idaho State.
Playing in their first game at Folsom Field, the dynamic duo connected twice for touchdowns totaling 88 yards, and their impressive stats don't even tell the whole story.
Montez made his collegiate debut a week ago against Colorado State, playing the last series of the game. But he handed off four times and did not throw a pass.
Saturday, he finally got that opportunity.
"It was a great time getting out there and making a showing on Folsom for the first time," Montez said. "It was really fun. I felt like it was getting familiar again after not playing for a year."
With under a minute left in the second quarter, Montez connected with Ento for a 69-yard touchdown pass. The touchdown pass just happened to be the first career pass attempt for Montez, a redshirt freshman, while also being Ento's first reception as a Buff.
Ento, a junior college transfer, caught the ball near the Idaho State 40-yard line, broke a tackle and then raced to the end zone.
Explaining how the experience felt, Montez said, "I saw Kabion was open. I got him the ball and after that it was completely Kabion. I don't want to take any credit for that…he just went off on that play and got loose."
Later on in the third quarter, the two connected again for a 19-yard touchdown pass for Colorado's last touchdown of the day. Asked how it felt having his two receptions turn into touchdowns, Ento sakd, "It's all I dreamed about. From playing in junior college to now, I've been lucky and blessed."
The final stat line for Ento's day was two receptions for 88 yards and two touchdowns.
When asked about Ento's day, head coach MacIntyre said, "He's just starting to get his feet wet in major college football, and he's a guy who's a weapon for us. You'll see him out there more and more as the season goes along."
Montez completed six of his 10 attempts 117 yards and two touchdowns.
"I thought he did well," MacIntyre said. "You saw his strong arm on the curl route that Kabion made those guys miss. I saw him make a couple good runs and we saw him improvise one time and he was able to dump it over the defender. He has those intangibles."
