Ormeño Ruiz, Wojcik Battle Into Semifinals At CU Invite

September 23, 2016 | Tennis

BOULDER – The second day of the University of Colorado Invite kicked off early Friday morning at the South Campus Tennis Complex.  CU finished the day off with an overall record of 4-4, in their first full day of singles play for the 2016-17 season.  Georgetown, Colorado State, Arkansas and the University of New Mexico along with CU had players taking part in the tournament, as the first and second rounds were played and decided during the day.

WHAT HAPPENED:  First round singles play began bright and early, with CU having three women competing in the mornings' first matches.

Junior Kyra Wojcik played Georgetown senior Maggie Psyhogeos beating her in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 to take her first round match.  Building off of her first round win, Wojcik took care of business in the second round.  Handling CSU freshman Solene Crawley in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.  Wojcik will take on UNM's senior Emily Olivier tomorrow morning in the semifinals looking to advance and play for the championship in her draw.

Entering the season nationally ranked No. 110, Nuria Ormeño Ruiz began her senior campaign with a first round bye, so she played her first match in the second round against New Mexico senior Dominique Dulski.  Ormeño Ruiz dominated the match, her only one of the day, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 setting up a semifinal match against Georgetown junior Sara Swift tomorrow morning.

Freshman Chloe Hule played in her first colligate match, facing Georgetown's Swift and dropped the match 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.  Hule did show some grit and determination against her seasoned opponent, taking the second set to force a third set.  Hule was able to push the third set to the brink before dropping the set and the match.

CU junior Louise Ronaldson dropped her first round match against Georgetown senior Sophie Barnard 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-4.  Ronaldson did start strong, forcing the tiebreaker she won easily in the first set.  But was unable to keep up the momentum and dropped her next two sets and the match.

Sophomore Annabelle Andrinopoulos matched up against Georgetown junior Daphne de Chatellus and the two had a marathon match that went to a tiebreaker.  De Chatellus would eventually pull the win out 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (4) but Andrinopoulos didn't go down without a fight.

After dropping the first set, Andrinopoulos handled the second set with ease forcing the third and deciding set.  Both women traded leads throughout the final set, until de Chatellus was able to force the tiebreaker with Andrinopoulos.  In that tiebreaker de Chatellus pulled out the points she needed to win, taking the tiebreaker 7-4 to finish off the match.

As for play in the consolation brackets, Hule faced CSU's freshman Alyssa Grijala and Ronaldson took on CSU's sophomore Emily Kolbow.  Hule, facing a tough opponent, dropped her match in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to finish off her first day of collegiate tennis.

Ronaldson finished her day with a big comeback win, taking her match against Kolbow 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.  After dropping the first set, Ronaldson dug in ready to fight for her first win as a Buff.  The score in the second set proved her determination, and she finished off the comeback with a solid 6-4 third set win.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Ronaldson's win in her second match of the day was her first win in a Colorado uniform after transferring from Mississippi State during the offseason.

UP NEXT: Singles play will conclude Saturday morning starting at 10 a.m.  Both Wojcik and Ormeño Ruiz will play in the semifinals looking to reach the finals in each women's respective draws.  Hule, Andrinopoulos, and Ronaldson will play through the consolation brackets, looking to finish the weekend off with a strong performance.  Doubles play will resume on Sunday during the final day of the CU Invite.

Postgame Quotes
Nicole Kenneally, head coach
On how the team did Saturday
"Today was our first singles matches of the season, so it's good to come out and play just to see where we are as a team.  I think we are doing some things great and with intent and at times we get away from that, which makes out jobs tougher out there.  The emphasis will be to continue to have intent while we play for a longer period of time, since that's what's going to put you in a position to win.  As long as we're in there competing with our heart, mind, soul and body, we're going to be putting ourselves in position to do (well).  All the girls did good things today, and they also did some things we need to improve on, so we look forward to tomorrow."
