Ormeño Ruiz Captures Singles Title At CU Invitational
September 24, 2016 | Tennis
BOULDER - Nuria Ormeño Ruiz won the singles title at the CU Invitational as Colorado's tennis team wrapped up singles play in Boulder on Saturday. It was very windy day at CU's South Campus Tennis Courts, but Ormeño Ruiz proved tougher in the conditions as she defeated Georgetown's Sophie Barnard 6-4, 6-3 in the Gold Draw finals.
WHAT HAPPENED: Ormeño Ruiz cruised into the finals with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Sara Swift (Georgetown) in the semifinals Saturday morning. Kyra Wojcik also advanced easily into the Black Draw finals with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Emily Olivier (New Mexico).
In the back draw, Louise Ronaldson, Jeannez Daniel, Annabelle Andrinopoulos and Chloe Hule all won matches Saturday morning as well.
Ronaldson swept Madeline Foley (Georgetown) 6-2, 6-2. Daniel, who missed Thursday and Friday's action with an illness, returned to the court for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over Sandra Keta (Colorado State). Andrinopoulos and Hule both won in straight sets as Andrinopoulos defeated Solene Crawley (CSU) 6-1, 6-4 and Hule earned her first collegiate singles victory 7-5, 6-4 over Emily Kolbow (CSU).
Ronaldson and Andrinopoulos both won their back-draw matches in the afternoon session as well. Ronaldson swept CSU's Celine Voss 6-0, 6-2 and Andrinopoulos defeated Georgetown's Maggie Psyhogeos 6-1, 6-2.
Wojcik fell in the finals in the Black Draw 6-1, 6-4 to New Mexico's Rachana Bhat.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Ormeño Ruiz finished the tournament 3-0 in singles matches and Wojcik went 3-1.
UP NEXT: Sunday's competition was cancelled as the teams decided to rest their players instead. The Buffs will be back in action on Oct. 3 when Ormeño Ruiz competes at the ITA All-American Championships.

On how the team played today
"At the beginning of the day we talked about it being Day 3 of the tournament, similar to what we are going to experience at the Pac-12 team championships this spring. Maybe we're feeling a little bit tired, but so is everyone else. We're not going to use that; it's just going to be more a matter of, 'hey we're going to get the job done.' I think in the first round we played great tennis all the way down the line. It's fun to see six courts playing at the same time and it kind of felt a little bit like dual match, even though we had other teams on the other side. I think everyone played with great purpose. It was unfortunate Kyra didn't get that last one, but I think there are still opportunities to improve there. We understand what we did well and what we may have let slip by us. Ultimately, we played with great intent and great purpose and we didn't waste opportunities. I think overall we played clean tennis."
On the play of Nuria Ormeño Ruiz
"We leave next Sunday for the All-Americans. It's another opportunity to play at that level and get a couple of good matches under her belt. She's going to get tested but she's takes care of the high percentage plays and works through some of the kinks in her game. She's hitting the ball well and her mind is in a good spot. She just needs to keep working on the body and making sure we are as good as we can be."
On Chloe Hule and Louise Ronaldson winning their first matches at CU
"I think that was important [for them to get their first wins]. I think for the two of them, I was happy. Lou got her first win yesterday and Chloe had a great win this morning. Kolbow from CSU is a very good player and solid. I was happy she pulled that one out. Getting that first one is a big one sometimes."

On starting the season with a win in her first tournament
"It feels great. It gives you confidence. It's the first tournament of the year. Especially on a day like this when it's so windy, you don't really know how it's going to go. It feels great to win and have your team supporting you."
On playing in the windy conditions
"It's tough, it's hard to play. I think it comes down to who is mentally stronger and who doesn't think about the weather and how windy it is and how terrible the conditions we are playing in."
