Buffs Look For Second Straight Win In Rematch At Utah
January 27, 2017 | Women's Basketball
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Colorado's women's basketball team will be looking for its second straight win on Saturday when the Buffaloes hit the road for a game at Utah, a rematch of Wednesday's matchup in Boulder that saw the Buffs come out on top 54-49. The home-and-home week with Utah is unique to the Pac-12 scheduling.
"They'll be playing at home [Saturday], which everybody is more comfortable at home," first-year head coach JR Payne said after Wednesday's win. "Both teams will try to make adjustments; we'll see what we did well, what didn't we do well, what should we do differently, so it kind of becomes a chess match, which is really fun as a coach. The biggest thing is to not try to get too creative. If something was working, go for it. We have to build on [our] strengths and try to figure out where our weaknesses were [Wednesday], try to fix those things. But I don't think we need to go back to the drawing board. [We'll] stick with what worked."
Since joining the league, Colorado and Utah have faced off twice in the same week four times with CU coming out with a 3-1 record in the second game of that series, and the team that wins the first game of the week also has a 3-1 record in the second meeting as well. The 2013-14 season was the only year that the team that won the first game lost the second; CU dropped the first matchup 58-55 in Salt Lake City on Jan. 29, but rebounded with a 61-45 win at home four days later.
CU took a 15-14 edge in the all-time matchup with the Utes on Wednesday, but the Buffs have held a more comfortable edge in the series since the two schools entered the Pac-12 in 2011. Colorado is 8-4 against Utah in that time.
A win for the Buffs on Saturday would also be important for two other reasons: they have not won back-to-back Pac-12 games since 2014-15 and have a 14-game road losing streak in the league, with the last Pac-12 road win coming on Feb. 27, 2015 at Arizona.
Tipoff for Saturday's game is set for 12:30 p.m. at the Jon M. Huntsman Center and it will be televised on Pac-12 Mountain Network. Radio coverage throughout the Boulder and Denver area will be provided by ESPN 1600 AM.
NOTES: Zoe Beard-Fails made her first start of the season on Wednesday, replacing Zoe Correal at center. It was the first time all season the Buffs have adjusted their starters from Correal, Kennedy Leonard, Alexis Robinson, Haley Smith and Makenzie Ellis. In notes of the weird, Colorado has scored the exact same number of points (378) in the first and fourth quarters combined this season. Even weirder, the Buffs have also scored the exact same number of points (346) in the second and third quarters.
