Women Win Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invite ‘B’ Race, Men Take Second

October 13, 2017 | Cross Country

MADISON, Wis. — The Colorado Buffaloes put on a great show in the 'B' races at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Friday with the women taking first and the men placing second.

The women's team, which led for the entire race, recorded a total score of 35 points to best Michigan State, which recorded 60 points. Boise State finished third in the race with 80 points and Washington State was fourth (111).

The men were second to Stanford as the Cardinal narrowly defeated CU by a score of 60-66. Michigan State was third with 78 points and Colorado State tallied 95 points for fourth overall.

WOMEN'S RACE: Melanie Nun had an outstanding race for the Buffs, finishing second overall in 20:53.4. She clocked in almost 18 seconds faster than the third-place finisher, Boise State's Kyra Lopez, who recorded a time of 21:11.5.

Two of her teammates, Tayler Tuttle and Val Constien, also recorded top-10 finishes. Tuttle was sixth overall, finishing in 21:15.0, and Constien was right behind her in seventh with a time of 21:15.8.

Mackenzie Caldwell and Cayla Seligman were the other two scorers for the Buffs. Caldwell recorded a 14th place finish in 21:31.2 and Seligman was 19th in 21:37.0.

MEN'S RACE: Mark Tedder led the way for the men's team, recording a second place finish in 24:39.2, bettering Colorado State's Trent Powell, who was third in 24:40.9. Tedder ran a very nice race; he was third at the 2k mark and improved to second by 6k, where he would finish.

The Buffaloes had another top-10 finisher in Reilly Friedman, who recorded a sixth place finish in 24:47.7.

The next CU runner to cross the finish was Christian Martin at 22nd (25:10.7). Paxton Smith was next at 32nd (25:19.1) and Sal Capetillo was the final scorer at 38th (25:26.2).

UP NEXT: Colorado's top-ranked women and seventh-rated men are set to compete on Saturday, Oct. 14, in Louisville, Ky., at NCAA Pre-Nationals.

QUOTE:
Associate Head Coach Heather Burroughs
Thoughts on the women's team performance
"The women ran as a whole very well. We had women in there who were interrupted last spring and are battling back and fighting for varsity positions. Melanie in particular was impressive. It was a nearly solo race for her. She was in second place from nearly a kilometer to the finish, which is a hard way to run it, so she really impressed me. Val and Tayler were also excellent."

Thoughts on the men's team performance
"Stanford is a very good team. On paper they probably should finish ahead of our men in this race. I would say through three or four, our men were very good, but then the others were kind of hanging on to dear life in the final kilometer. I think Mark [Tedder] would agree that was his best cross country race. That's intriguing for us. He's a graduate student, he's new to us and he's looking like he can be a varsity runner for us in the next month."
