Golfers Open In 13th At Hawaii's Princeville Intercollegiate

First Competition in 32 Days
PRINCEVILLE, Kaua'i — The University of Colorado men's golf team definitely exhibited some signs of rust from a five-week layoff and finds itself in 13th place after the first round Sunday of the Hawaii Warrior Princeville Makai Intercollegiate, the Buffs' final tournament of the fall season.
No. 40 Louisville came out on fire, turning in a 22-under par team score of 266; that matched the low in college golf all last season, recorded by two teams, including the Buffs. The Cardinals had four players shoot in the 60s (65, 66, 66, 69) en route to their team score, which as good as it is, is only four ahead of No. 36 Missouri (270). No. 50 San Diego State (274), No. 20 UCLA (279) and Sam Houston State and Washington (both at 280) round out the top five.
The Buffaloes, ranked No. 47, are down the line in 13th with a 1-over 289 score, certainly not horrible, but judging by other team scores, there were plenty of opportunities to shoot low. Colorado would have competed in Denver's Paintbrush Invitational the second week of October, were sidelined when the meet was snowed out. CU last played in its own Mark Simpson Invitational some 32 days ago, making this the longest layoff between meets in recent memory.
Sophomore Daniel O'Loughlin fashioned a 1-under 71 on the 7,223-yard, par-72 Princeville Makai Golf Club layout, consistent with two birdies and 15 pars against a single bogey; the latter tied for the second-most pars in the field for the first round. He is tied for 34th overall, six shots out of the lead.
Freshman Trevor Olkowski had one of those "smorgasbord" rounds, with an eagle (his first as a collegian), five birdies, nine pars, two doubles and a triple; it all added to an even-par 72 that has him tied for 44th. He was minus-3 on the four par-5 holes, tying him for eighth in the field.
Seniors Spencer Painton and John Souza are tied for 54th after carding 1-over 73s, though getting their in opposite fashions. Painton had a 40 on the front nine but tamed the back a bit with a 33 (he had three birdies and 12 pars on the day), while Souza went 35-38 (two birdies, 13 pars).
Senior Yannik Paul rounded out the CU scorers with a 6-over 78; sidelined by some back issues from mid-September (he missed the CU home meet), he is just starting to get back into a competitive groove. He had a birdie and 12 pars against four bogeys and a triple and is tied for 99th in the standings.
Sophomore Victor Bjorlow is playing here as an individual, meaning his score doesn't count toward the CU team total. He turned in a solid even-par effort with five birdies and eight pars against five bogeys, and is tied for 44th with Olkowski. He played the par-5s at 4-under Sunday, tied with six others for the best in the field.
"We came out a bit rusty today and just never really got it going," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "Trevor did a really nice job playing his first round counting on the team. He had three bad swings that cost him 6 shots or else he could have been really good. Overall, the guys have looked good so we expect us to have a good final two rounds." Four players are tied for the individual lead at 7-under 65; in the 113-man field, 23 players shot in the 60s, 43 turned in under par scores and another 10 equaled it as the average score Sunday was 72.7.
The second round is set for Monday, with the final 18 holes Tuesday. The Buffaloes will tee off at Noon MDT for their second round action and will be paired with Cal Poly, San Diego and Georgia Southern.
