All Five CU Designated Scorers Shoot In The 60s
PRINCEVILLE, Kaua'i — The University of Colorado men's golf team turned in its best round of the fall season and the Buffaloes moved up five spots into a tie for eighth as the second round of the Hawaii Warrior Princeville Makai Intercollegiate was completed here Monday.
No. 40 Louisville maintained its first round lead in posting another solid round (19-under Monday) to enter the final 18 holes with a 41-under par 535 team score. Yet the Cardinal can't shake No. 36 Missouri, as the Tigers recorded a second straight 18-under 270 for a 540 total and are within five strokes of the top spot. No. 20 UCLA took over third (547), with No. 50 San Diego State fourth (548) and Sam Houston State (550) rounding out the top five.
The Buffaloes, ranked No. 47, fired a 16-under 272 score for a 15-under 561 total through 36 holes, moving from 13th place into a tie for eighth with Mississippi. CU had not competed in more than a month and showed signs of inactivity in the first rounds, but obviously shook off the rust in recording its best round of the fall by three strokes over its previous best.
All five of CU's designated scorers shot under par on the 7,223-yard, par-72 Princeville Makai Golf Club layout, and all in the 60s at that, and moved up a collective 79 spots in the standings. It's the first time in program history that all five scorers posted scores in the 60s; four had been done a handful of times, most recently last February in Wyoming's Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Springs.
Sophomore Daniel O'Loughlin continued to pace the Buffaloes, as he carded a 3-under 69 for a 4-under 140 total, which has him tied for 27th. He has seven birdies and 26 pars with only three bogeys here, enabling him to take the team lead in subpar rounds with seven (out of 11 played).
Senior John Souza and freshman Trevor Olkowski are tied for 37th with 3-under 141 scores. Souza recorded a 4-under 68 in round two (four birdies and 14 pars), while Olkowski put a 3-under 69 into the books, thanks to a team-high seven birdies against eight pars, two bogeys and a double.
Senior Spencer Painton also posted a 3-under 69 that moved him to 2-under 142 for the event, tying him for 45th. He had four birdies and 13 pars with just a single bogey in his second trip around the Makai Club circuit.
And CU's other senior Yannik Paul, rounded out the CU scorers with a solid comeback from his Monday score, firing a team-best 6-under 66 that got him back to even par (144). The 12-stroke improvement from a 78 to 66 was the second best of his career, one shy of an 82-69 rally from the second to third rounds of the Pac-12 Championships his freshman year. He was bogey-free Tuesday, recording six birdies and 12 pars.
Sophomore Victor Bjorlow recorded a second straight even-par 72 for a 144 total, which has him tied for 60th with Paul. Playing here as an individual (his score doesn't count toward the CU team total), he has nine birdies, 28 pars and 9 bogeys through two rounds. Along with Olkowski, he's playing the par-5 holes at 6-under par, tied for ninth-best in the field.
"Today was much better," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "A Really nice round and comeback from yesterday by Yannik – that was more like his normal self. John really battled his way to a 68, Daniel played much better than his 69 as he couldn't get many putts to fall. Spencer was solid as well and Trevor did a really nice job once again. Victor struggled a bit with his putting and we expect a better round from him tomorrow."No. 40 Louisville maintained its first round lead in posting another solid round (19-under Monday) to enter the final 18 holes with a 41-under par 535 team score. "Overall we did a much better job of eliminating unforced mistakes and took advantage of some opportunities on the holes here you can score on."
Colorado leads the field in pars with 119, and is 11th in birdies with 39.
Missouri's Hayden Buckley is the individual leader through two rounds with a 17-under 127 total after firing a 61 Monday; he had nine birdies and an eagle. Louisville's Simon Zach is two back at 129, with Georgia Southern's Steven Zink third at 131 after carding a 12-under 60 in the second round (he had 10 birdies and an eagle, shooting 30 on each side).
The third and final round is set for a shotgun start Tuesday, with CU to tee off at Noon MDT on holes 4 through 6, paired with Sam Houston State, Wake Forest and East Tennessee State. This is the final competition of the fall season, as the Buffaloes will resume action with an alumni match in Scottsdale in late January ahead of the spring opener in Hawai'i on February 1.
