Golfers Finish Fall Season Tying For 10th In Princeville Intercollegiate

O'Loughlin, Paul pace Buffaloes with 4-under par efforts
PRINCEVILLE, Kaua'i — The University of Colorado men's golf team turned in its best round of the fall season and the Buffaloes finished in a tie for 10th in the Hawaii Warrior Princeville Makai Intercollegiate, CU's final competition of the fall season.
No. 40 Louisville led from wire-to-wire and was on fire all three days, winning with an astounding 56-under par 808 team score. The Cardinal utilized nine rounds in the 60s, two others under par and an even-par tally as none of their scorers turned in a round over par in the three days here. No. 50 San Diego State zoomed into second place after turning the top final round score (19-under 269), but were still nine back of Louisville at 817. No. 36 Missouri (824), No. 20 UCLA (827) and No. 5 Wake Forest (831) rounded out the top five.
The Buffaloes, ranked No. 47, tied for 10th with Pac-12 rival Washington, as both recorded 16-under par 848 scores. The Buffs, after shooting a 16-under 272 in the second round, came back closer to par in Tuesday's final round with a 1-under 287 and slipped two spots in the final standings. CU opened strong and was 6-under through six holes, but couldn't maintain the pace it had the day before.
"Today we got off to a good start, we were 7-under or so at one point early, but really played poorly from that point on," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "Overall, it was a pretty disappointing tournament, we had one good round sandwiched in-between two bad ones, and a 10th place finish was the end result. We just need to get everybody playing together – it seems when we play well, everybody plays well, and when we play poorly, it's everybody. We haven't had that one or two guys catch fire, so we need to go into the spring season looking for consistency."
Senior Yannik Paul and sophomore Daniel O'Loughlin led the CU performances here, posting cumulative scores of 4-under 212 on the 7,223-yard, par-72 Princeville Makai Golf Club course; both tied for 32nd in the standings.
Paul closed with scores of 66 and 68 after opening with a 78 to record the 15th tournament of his career under par (out of 39 events). Over his last 36 holes, he had 11 birdies, 24 pars and a single bogey. Back-to-back birdies had O'Loughlin 2-under early in his final round, but he eventually settled for three birdies and 12 pars against three bogeys, of which he had just six of the latter all tournament (he had 10 birdies and 38 pars).
Senior John Souza fashioned a 1-over 73 to finish at 2-under 214, tying for 46th after scoring three birdies and 11 pars. He tied O'Loughlin for the team-high in pars for the meet with 38, which were also fourth-most in the 113-man field.
Senior Spencer Painton closed with a 2-over 74 for an even-par 216 total, tying him for 58th. He did tie for ninth in total pars for the three rounds with 37, as was 12th in par-3 scoring (he played the dozen collectively at even par).
Freshman Trevor Olkowski rounded out the CU scorers, shooting a final round 76 that forced him to finish 1-over for the meet at 217.
Sophomore Victor Bjorlow played here as an individual (his score did not count toward the team total), and he wrapped things up with a 2-under 70 for a 214 total, also 2-under, in finishing in a tie for 46th, as well as tying for fourth among the 13 players here competing individually. It was his second straight tournament under par, as he posted 12 birdies, 32 pars and 10 bogeys for the event.
Louisville's Simon Zach carded a final round 66 to earn medalist honors with a 21-under par 195 score, edging second round leader from Missouri, Hayden Buckley, by two shots. Georgia Southern's Steven Zink, who fired the low round in college golf this fall (a second round, 12-under 60) finished tied for third at 198.
"We can use a bad tournament at the end of the fall to our advantage, if we choose to have it motivate us, and I expect that we will," Edwards added. "Overall (in the fall season), we had some good, and some in-between; Daniel had a really good fall overall, and it was good to see Yannik rebound and play well the last two rounds of the fall. It wasn't the way we wanted to end it, but I'm also very excited for the spring. This is a team that has a chance to be very good, and this offseason will dictate if we're going to have a good team or a great one."
Colorado will return to action in about two-and-a-half months with an alumni match in Scottsdale in late January ahead of the spring opener right back here in Hawai'i in the Amer Ari Invitational February 1-3.
NOTES: O'Loughlin wound up leading the team in stroke average for the fall with an even 71.0 for 12 rounds; the McNeese State transfer tied for the third best fall norm in school history … Painton's 71.17 mark is the seventh best fall effort (also 12 rounds) … Six Buffs recorded sub-73 averages for the fall, a program best … Colorado finished second in total pars here (175), but was 13th in birdies; Olkowski and Painton scored eagles (Painton had a team-high three for the fall, Olkowski's was his first as a collegian) … Bjorlow, O'Loughlin and Souza did not score worse than a bogey all tournament (out of 324 holes, the Buffs collectively had just six doubles and two triples) … The average score for the field was 72.03 (for a total of 332 rounds).
