Volleyball Heads Out On Road To Face Washington State and No. 9 Washington

BOULDER— Colorado will start a four-match road-trip this weekend in Washington. The Buffs start off on Friday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. MT. in Pullman, Wash., against Washington State. They will then head to Seattle to square off against No. 9 Washington. That match is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. MT.
HOW TO WATCH: Both matches this weekend will be televised live on Pac-12 Mountain and Pac-12 Washington.

ABOUT THE BUFFS: CU is currently 12-3 overall (2-2 Pac-12) and re-entered the AVCA Poll this week at 25th. Colorado picked up a pair of wins last weekend in Boulder, defeating Oregon State, 3-2, and then-No. 12 Oregon, 3-1.
Junior Alexa Smith leads the Buffs and ranks sixth in the Pac-12 with 4.13 kills per set and is also second in the league in attacks (11.21 per set). Junior Naghede Abu has the team's best hitting percentage at .385, which is second in the conference and Anna Pfefferle is second for the Buffs with a .333 hitting efficiency.
Colorado's offense is being directed by freshman setter Brynna DeLuzio. She ranks second in the Pac-12 and is 23rd in the NCAA with an 11.19 assists per set average and has guided the Buffs to a .263 mark. She was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the second time this season on Oct. 2 and is the first Buff to ever earn that honor twice.
Defensively the Buffs are led by Abu, the reigning Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week, who is recording 1.34 blocks per set (seventh in the Pac-12 and 36th in the NCAA). Junior Gabby Carta-Samuels ranks eighth in the conference with a 3.53 digs per set mark.
SCOUTING THE COUGARS: Washington State has a very respectable 12-4 record (1-3 Pac-12) entering the weekend. The Cougars only lost once during the non-conference slate (Baylor, 3-2, on August 31) and have lost three matches during Pac-12 play to ranked opponents. Taylor Mims leads the WSU attack with 3.52 kills per set. As a team, the Cougars are averaging 12.17 kills and are hitting .229 in a 6-2 offense. Ashley Brown and Penny Tusa are averaging 5.22 and 4.11 assists per set, respectively. WSU's block is posted the second best mark in the Pac-12, as well as the fifth in the nation, at 3.16 per set. Three Cougars are averaging over 1.00 blocks per set. Jocelyn Urias is fourth in the conference (18th in the NCAA) with 1.50 and Ella Lajos is eighth in the league with 1.24. The other Cougar is Claire Martin, who is averaging 1.16 blocks per set.

The Huskies only losses have been against ranked teams; they lost 3-1 to then-No. 9 Creighton and just suffered a loss at then-No. 20 USC (3-0) on Oct. 1. Carly DeHoog leads UW with 3.10 kills per set and is hitting at a .376 clip. The Huskies are tough at the service line with a pair ranked in the top five of the conference standings. Courtney Schwan is averaging 0.45 service aces per set, while Tia Scambray is fourth with 0.39. The Huskies are also a solid team on the block, posting a league-leading mark of 3.29 blocks per set, which is third in the NCAA. Marion Hazelwood leads the Pac-12 with 1.56 per set, which is eighth in the NCAA, and Lauren Sanders is third in the conference, 14th in the NCAA, with 1.53. DeHoog is 11th in the Pac-12 with 1.20.
