Klecker, Huang Earn UCHealth CU Athlete of the Week Honors

November 14, 2017 | Cross Country, Tennis

Joe Klecker (Cross Country) and Linda Huang (Tennis) have been named this week's UCHealth CU Athletes of the Week for their outstanding performances over the past week (11/6-11/12).

Sophomore Joe Klecker won the men's 10k at last Friday's NCAA Mountain Region Championships in Logan, Utah. He was in 14th after two miles, but jumped up to third by the three-mile split. Then in the final stretch, he edged out the DI pre-nationals winner BYU's Rory Linkletter, to cross the finish line first in 30:13.6. Klecker becomes the first Buff to win the men's region championship since Billy Nelson did it in 2005. CU's men finished third behind top-ranked Northern Arizona and BYU.

Freshman Linda Huang earned her second tournament championship of the season on Sunday, winning the singles' Red Draw at the SDSU Fall Tennis Classic II. The first of her three victories came on Friday, when Huang took the victory over Katerina Stioukalova from Fresno State 6-4, 7-6 (4). On Saturday, she defeated Daniela Morales (USD) 6-3, 6-4 to move on to the championship round. Huang faced Cal Poly's Susanne Boyden in the tournament's championship, and won a thrilling three-set match by a score of 6-3, 6-7(10), 7-5. Huang won the Gold Draw singles championship at the CU invite earlier this fall.

Also nominated for this week's honors: Annika Jank (Women's Basketball), George King (Men's Basketball), Taylor Kornieck (Soccer), Makena Morley (Cross Country), and Juwann Winfree (Football)

Freshman forward Annika Jank averaged 15.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in her first two games at the collegiate level, leading the Buffs to a 1-1 record on the road last weekend. In Friday night's win over Samford, she scored 16 points while shooting an efficient 7-of-11 from the field, and added eight rebounds. Jank reached double figures again in Sunday's overtime loss to North Carolina, tallying 15 points and seven rebounds, to go along with four blocked shots.

On the men's side, senior guard George King guided the Buffs to a season-opening victory over Northern Colorado, recording 12 points and nine rebounds in just 19 minutes of action. He shrugged off early foul trouble to score all 12 of his points in the second half, going 4-of-7 from the field. He also grabbed eight of his game-high nine rebounds in the second half.

Sophomore midfielder Taylor Kornieck starred in a 2-1 victory over Denver in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday. Trailing 0-1 early in the second half, Kornieck recorded an assist on Megan Massey's equalizer in the 50th minute. She found the back of the net herself just two minutes later, scoring what would prove to be the game winning goal in a 2-1 match. Kornieck had a game-high six shot attempts, including another near-goal in the 69th minute.

Junior Makena Morley led the CU women at regionals for the second straight year, placing seventh overall in the 6k in 20:21.5. In 2016, she was the Buffs' top finisher, coming in fourth. Morley ran very steady as she was eighth after the mile-mark and had moved in to seventh, where she would stay, by the two-mile split. The top-ranked women won their fifth straight region title, defeating New Mexico 62-70.

Junior receiver Juwann Winfree enjoyed a career day in Saturday's 24-38 defeat at the hands of USC. Winfree reeled in five catches for a career-high 163 yards and two touchdowns. He registered his first touchdown as a Buff on a 79-yard third quarter reception from Montez; Winfree's 79-yard score was CU's longest play from scrimmage, not only this season, but since Paul Richardson's 82-yard touchdown against CSU in 2013. He hauled in another 57-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
