Junior wins two FIS slalom races, hits the podium in two giant slalom races
BOULDER — University of Colorado junior alpine skier Ola Johansen won two slalom races and had a pair of podium finishes in two giant slalom events over the weekend in the FIS races held at Vail Mountain.
He got off to the hot start on Friday by winning both men's slalom races.
In the first one he edged Alex Leever, a member of the U.S. Ski Team who just completed his eligibility for the University of Denver, by just over a half second to win the race.
In the second race later Friday afternoon, Johansen's second run time of 46.23 was enough to overtake Nef Tanguy, a sophomore from Dartmouth, for the victory by just over a tenth of a second.
The victories followed up his slalom win in another FIS race held at Vail Mountain back on April 10. In his first two seasons on the NCAA circuit, Johansen had won one slalom race, which came in the 2016 RMISA qualifier held at New Mexico.
After the two slalom wins, he capped off his weekend with a third place finish in Friday's giant slalom race and took second on Sunday in the same event.
Johansen was a second-team All-American in the giant slalom for the Buffs in 2016 and has two NCAA Championship experiences under his belt heading into his third winter in Boulder. The NCAA circuit kicks off in January.
