Tennis 2017 In Review

December 28, 2017 | Tennis

BOULDER - Midway through last summer, Colorado announced the signing of standout Linda Huang.

Huang didn't take long to make an impact. The freshman from Sydney, Australia, won two tournaments and advanced to the ITA Regional finals in CU's fall schedule, serving notice that she will be a forced to be reckoned with for the Buffs in the future.

Huang opened the fall season by winning the Gold Draw singles championship at the CU Invitational in September to open the fall season, then wrapped up the fall campaign by winning three matches in three days to claim the San Diego State Fall Classic Red Draw championship.

In between, she finished second in the ITA Regional meet in Salt Lake City, winning five straight matches before finally falling in the championship match. Her win streak included a marathon, two-hour, 45-minute three-set win over Nevada's Claudio Herrero in the quarterfinals and another three-set win over Denver's Julia O'Laughlin — the draw's top seed — in the semifinals.

Other highlights for the 2017 Buffs included Brigitte Beck earning designation as an ITA Scholar-Athlete and Pac-12 Academic honorable mention honors; and Annabelle Andrinopoulos also earning Pac-12 Academic honorable mention designation.

Sport Supervisor Jillian Keegan On Tennis

"There are several things that stick out to me as I look back on the 2017 calendar year as it relates to our tennis program.  The main that that sticks out are the people.  Nicole Keneally is one of our longest-tenured coaches and one thing she does really well is integrate her team into the rest of the department.   She continuously takes time to support each of our 16 other varsity sports and all of our student-athletes.  The tennis team's commitment to working in the community, along with competing for championships in the classroom and on the tennis court is solid.

"It's the things you don't see off the court that I remember the most.  Brigitte Beck earning an ITA Scholar-Athlete award and her and Annabelle Andrinopoulos both being named to the Pac-12 All-Academic team. It's the countless hours these women spend in the classroom and the community. On the court, when Brigitte Beck solidified a three-set win over Washington State last spring and when Linda Huang advanced to the ITA Regional final match this fall that stick out the most. Also, Annabelle competed in the WUG for Australia, winning her first match but losing her second match to the eventual silver medal winner. I'm looking forward to seeing what this team can do this spring."
