Buffs Close Out Cardinal Classic on A Strong Note

April 23, 2017 | Track and Field

STANFORD, Calif. – It was a successful final day for the University of Colorado track and field team at the Cardinal Classic here late Saturday night as Ben Saarel won the 1,500 meters, posting one of the top times in the country.

WHAT HAPPENED:
Distance saw a good day in the 1,500 meters as Ben Saarel took home the event title with a impressive early season time of 3:40.24. Saarel is only two seconds off his personal best time and CU record of 3:38.40. This is currently the fourth fastest time in the NCAA. Freshman Sage Hurta, ran a 4:18.42, 1,500 meter time to finish sixth in the invitational section. Hurta following Dani Jones as she now owns the second fastest 1,500 meter time for a freshman.

The steeplechase has always been a favorite for the CU distance runners and this year is no different as freshman Madison Boreman continues the impressive tradition. Boreman finished second in the race with a time of 10:12.80 which moves her into seventh all-time in CU history alongside some very talented names like Jenny Barringer, Emma Coburn, Shalaya Kipp and Erin Clark. .

Maja Wichhart-Donzo put together a solid day of competition as she collected a PR in the long jump with a 39-8/12.09 mark to finish third overall. She also added an impressive time in the 100 meter hurdles, clocking another PR time of 14.23. On the men's side of the sprint hurdles, Jaron Thomas finished second with a time 14.27.

The 400 meter runners of Duane McClurkin Jr. and Gabby Scott both ran solid PR races. MClurkin Jr., took second place in the 400 meters clocking a personal best time of 46.30. Scott crossed the finish line with a personal best time of 54.32 to finish fourth.

The men had a successful day in the shot put as Aaron Haigler placed fifth with a toss of 50-00.25/15.25 a mark that is only .02 meters off his personal best. Teammate Austin Swanson finished in seventh with a mark of 44-4/13.5.

UP NEXT:
The Buffs will head back to Stanford California for the Payton Jordan Invitational on Thursday May 4.

QUOTABLE (Head Coach Mark Wetmore)
"Some good things happened today. A better day and weekend for the women over the men. Never the less, Duane had a good 200 race yesterday. Not his fastest, but maybe his second. And then today his 400 meter time, moving him way down the regional list. He may advance to the NCAA preliminary in two events.

Maja [Wichhart-Donzo] had a good day. Both today having the best triple jump day for her and I believe a PR in the shorter hurdles. Sage Hurta ran the second fastest freshman 1,500 meter time for us, 4:18. Her debut in a Colorado uniform in that distance. I am sure it will only get better.

Madison Boreman with a great steeplechase, with her sea level debut. She has only run it one other time up at our place a couple weeks ago. She ran a 10:12.80 today also a really good freshman time and moved way up the NCAA list.

Probably the best performance of the day was Ben in the 1,500 with both a victory and his fastest uniform time ever. Just about a second off his fastest from a year ago, which he ran at the end of the season as a red shirt. So 3:40.00 for Ben today, I think it is about fourth in the whole NCAA right now and it is only his second race of the season with still six to eight weeks to go. Really good run for him.
