Buffs End Record-Setting Season With Loss In NCAA Tournament

May 12, 2017 | Lacrosse

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Colorado Buffaloes had a year to remember, but their season ended on Friday night in the first round of the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament, falling 13-7 to Massachusetts (17-3) at Penn Park.

The Buffs finish the season with a 16-4 record, the best in school history.

WHAT HAPPENED: CU's Darby Kiernan got the scoring started in the game, finding the back of the net at 28:19. UMass came back to even the game three minutes later with its first marker.

Katie Macleay put the Buffs back in the lead at 21:22 with her first goal of the tournament and Miranda Stinson gave CU a two-goal lead, scoring her seventh man-up goal this season at 18:52.

The Minutewomen answered 30 seconds later with their second goal of the game, but Macleay scored her second marker at 15:25, giving the Buffs a two-goal advantage. The lead did not last long as UMass responded with its third goal at 12:58.

After a media timeout, the Buffs came out fast, winning the draw and attacking quickly. Macleay recorded a hat-trick at 12:47 off a pass from Marie Moore, again putting CU up by two. But UMass went on to score the next three goals before the end of the first half, giving the Minutewomen a 6-5 advantage at halftime.

Kiernan scored the first goal of the second half (27:02), tying the game up at 6-6, before the Minutewomen tallied five straight goals to take an 11-6 led.

The Buffs were not going to give in and Kiernan recorded her 13th hat-trick of the season, tallying CU's seventh goal of the game at 11:06. But that would be the last goal the Buffs would get as UMass finished the scoring for the game with two consecutive goals.

KEY STATISTICS: Massachusetts' goalkeeper played an incredible game, posting 16 saves against the Buffs. CU recorded 34 shots in the game, 23 which were on goal. UMass recorded 27 shots (20 on goal).  The Buffs led the battle in ground balls (25-14), but the Minutewomen had the edge in draw controls (15-7).

QUOTEABLE:
Head Coach Ann Elliott
"I think it is disappointing in the long run with the season that we've had. You want to get here and you draw it up differently in your head. The biggest thing we can take from this is that it doesn't matter what you do all season, it's what you do in May. And that is a lesson you can't learn until you get here. In the long run we will take that with us and we will grow and be a better team."

"There is a lot to be proud of this year, especially for this senior class. We will celebrate everything they have done and have achieved over the last four years."
