A look at the summer plans for the Buffs
BOULDER — Ever wonder what the Colorado ski team members do in the offseason?
To feed your curiosity, here is a list of what several Buffaloes have on the docket for their summer breaks.
Andrea Arnold – Women's Alpine
Arnold's summer plans would make many jealous. In May she will be spending two weeks in Cozumel, Mexico working with disabled children and dolphins at a dolphin rehabilitation center. There she will be working with the dolphin trainers and also holding swimming sessions with the children. After that, she heads to Europe for the next two months. It starts with a three or four day stop in Iceland before flying to Prague to visit where her family is from. At the end of June she will be skiing in France for a couple of weeks. In July, she is participating in a five-day conditioning camp with the Czech Ski Team (she is a dual citizen of the United States and the Czech Republic) and ends the month with another two-week ski training camp back in France.
Camilla Brautaset – Women's Nordic
The business administration major who is specializing in finance and management at CU landed a 10-week summer internship with Goldman Sachs in Salt Lake City. She is hoping to also take advantage of exploring the mountains by Salt Lake City. Brautaset will have one more semester next fall at CU before graduating in December 2017.
Petra Hyncicova – Women's Nordic
Hyncicova will be returning to her home in the Czech Republic where she will be working to obtain her masseuse certification, as she has plans of starting a career as a physical therapist once her skiing and academic careers conclude.
David Ketterer – Men's Alpine
After finishing up final exams next week, Ketterer will fly back home to join the German National Team for summer training. He will be with what he said is its "World Cup 2 training group," doing six weeks of dryland training in Innsbruck with his coach and teammates before they head to Norway to ski the last two week of July in Folgefonna. Following the Norway trip, Ketterer will participate in two more camps in the Saas Fee, a glacier in the heart of the Swiss Alps.
"I will leave the second camp early as I fly back to beloved Boulder to start my sophomore year." Ketterer said. "I will probably get around 25 days on skis before heading back to Colorado. I am also taking Calculus 2 online. This will be a great summer."
Max Luukko – Men's Alpine
Like many of the CU skiers who are from Europe, Luukko is looking forward to spending the summer with his family and friends who he has not seen since August. He has a couple ski trips planned in Europe this summer and is looking into a trip to New Zealand to ski there. The ski trips will compliment his intensive off-season training program and he also looks forward to fun summer activities he enjoys, like golf and tennis.
Megan McGrew – Women's Alpine
McGrew will spend the first part of her summer biking and hiking in her hometown of Frisco, Colo. Come July, she is traveling with her sister to explore New Zealand for two weeks. After that she will join the Treble Cone Race Academy (TCRA), New Zealand's world class alpine ski training camp, where she will be living in Wanaka and skiing/training at Treblecone with TCRA for another couple of weeks.
Bobby Moyer – Men's Alpine
Moyer has a diverse summer planned. He recently purchased an old van he plans on building into a camper that he is hopeful to have completed by June. After that he will be heading off to California. His workout schedule there will include strength training, surfing and skateboarding in addition to beach workouts running cones and intervals in the sand. He hopes to be in California for a month before returning to his hometown of Aspen to enjoy hiking and biking in July. Come August, he is looking into a trip to New Zealand or Mt. Hood, Oregon to get some time on the snow to prepare for the upcoming season.
"I usually like to let my summers take me where they may, as long as I'm doing something active and outdoors I'm happy," Moyer said. "I'm just happy to be relatively healthy for a summer and get some time to enjoy using my body instead of fixing it."
To pay for his adventures, he'll be on the lookout for a part-time job while in California and working for his father, Roger, who is a contractor, when back in Aspen.
Lucy Newman – Women's Nordic
Newman is set to graduate this May with her integrative physiology degree. She would like to get right to work, getting hands-on experience in the medical world. She says there is a lot that interests her and she does not want to be pinned down on one thing at this point, so she would like to get out and see which medical field intrigues her.
Petter Reistad – Men's Nordic
A busy summer awaits the four-time All-American. The finance major will be interning with the Norwegian Bank DNB as a risk analyst at their headquarters. He plans to roller ski back and forth to work every day to compliment his summer training regimen. He also has a trip planned to visit South Africa, Namibia and Tanzania and the last weeks before returning to Boulder in August for the fall 2017 semester, he will be a coach at a summer camp for kids and has a four-day hike planned in the mountains with some friends.
Max Scrimgeour – Men's Nordic
Scrimgeour is graduating this coming week with his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and will be retiring from skiing. His summer plans include a trip to Europe before starting his job in July with Goldman Sachs.
Tonje Trulsrud – Women's Alpine
The architectural engineering major will be staying at CU to take Maymester engineering classes before returning to her home in Norway for June, July and August. There she plans on training, hiking in the mountains and biking. Trulsrud signed up for a mountain bike race Grenseritter, which means the boarder race as it starts in Sweden and ends in Norway. According to Trulsrud, that race 51-mile (82.5 km) race is "just for fun, but still it will be hard and I have to beat my dad."
