Buffs in 10th After Strong Winds at NCAA Columbus Regional
May 08, 2017 | Women's Golf
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Colorado women's golf team is in 10th place after shooting 25-over par 313 in the opening round of the NCAA Columbus Regional here Monday afternoon.
Â
The 20th-ranked Buffaloes fought against considerable wind conditions to stay in the top 10 after a slow start. Colorado started the morning on the No. 1 tee, struggled with some big numbers on the front nine. A steady wind and frost delay made the par 72 course play even longer than its already tough distance of 6,416 yards.
Â
"Rough day for our team. Tough conditions," head coach Anne Kelly said "We didn't have our best stuff today, but the good news was Robyn [Choi] really finished strong. Â Brittany also played the back nine well. Although we didn't play well we still have a chance. We just have to play hard the next few days."
Â
With the tough conditions, no team shot under par as No. 4 ranked Florida holds the lead with a 9-over 297. Florida State sits in second place at 11-over 299 while Purdue and Ohio State are tied for third at 14-over 302. Texas A&M rounds out the top-5 carding a 20-over 308.
Â
Freshman Robyn Choi paced the Buffaloes in the first round, shooting a 3-over 75 and finds herself tied for 12th in the standings. Choi made nine pars and a team high three birdies against six bogeys. Just like the rest of the team, Choi struggled a little on the front nine recording five of her bogeys, but on hole No. 9 Choi dropped a birdie which set up her nicely for a strong back nine. She fired off four straight pars and a birdie to begin her back nine and stayed steady to finish her back nine at 1-under. Â
Â
Brittany Fan had the second lowest round for the Buffs. She is in with at 5-over 77 after the first 18 holes. Fan began the day carding five pars on the front nine to four bogeys to finish 4-over. Fan settled in as she usually does to fire out seven pars on the back nine to finish at only 1-over. She currently has the third most pars among the strong field with 13. Fan is currently sitting tied for 22nd.
Â
Freshman Kirsty Hodgkins recorded an 8-over par, 80 in round one as she shot plus five on the front nine and finished with plus three on the back. A quick birdie to start the back nine looked to kick-start Holdgkins, but she couldn't hold on as she followed it with a bogey. Hodgkins collected nine bogeys against eight pars and one birdie. She currently sits tied for 52nd overall.
Â
Senior Esther Lee struggled a little more than usual in the opening round as she carded a 9-over par 81 and sits tied for 65th. Lee fought hard to bounce back and hit a birdie on hole No. 13 to turn it around but then followed it by an unfortunate double bogey as she went up plus eight.
Â
Lauryn Keating fought through a tough day of strong winds to finish at 18-over par 90 and is sitting in 94th overall. Keating carded five bogeys and a double in the front nine to finish at 7-over and fought hard against the conditions but struggled more on the back nine. She added two double bogeys and a triple to finish the back nine at 11-over par.
Â
Individually Purdue's Marta Martin Garcia sits in first place as the only golfer to shoot under par at 2-under 70. Gabby Curtis of Wisconsin and Morgane Metraux of Florida State are tied for second carding an even-par 72. The trio of Maddie Szeryk (Texas A&M), Jaclyn Lee (Ohio State) and Marta Perez (Florida) are all tied for fourth place with a 1-over 73.
Â
The NCAA Regional continues Tuesday with the second round. The Buffs will tee-off from the first hole and are paired with Louisville and Wisconsin. Live scoring is available at GolfStat.com.Â
