Buffs Earn IWLCA Academic Honors

BOULDER - University of Colorado lacrosse players Carly Cox, Maddie DeWinter, Sydney Evensen and Paige Soenksen were named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Academic Honor Roll, which was announced on Wednesday afternoon.
To qualify for the award, individuals must be a junior, senior or graduate student and must have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or greater. This is the second selection for DeWinter and Soenksen, while it is the first for Cox and Evensen.
Cox, a Long Island, N.Y. native, made the team with a cumulative GPA of 3.521 in advertising. As a junior in 2017, she was selected to the MPSF All-Academic team for the second time. Cox excelled on the field her junior year as an attacker, earning a spot on the All-MPSF Second Team. She had the second most assists on the team (17) and scored a career best 27 goals.
DeWinter graduated this year with a cumulative GPA of 3.926 in biological and chemical engineering. The Parker, Colo. native was also an MPSF All-Academic team honoree in 2015 and 2016. She worked two years as an undergraduate research assistant in the Randolph Lab at CU where she performed a variety of experiments. DeWinter played midfield in five games in 2017, recording one goal, one assist, three groundballs and two draw controls.
Evensen, a finance major from Stillwater, Minn., has accumulated a grade point average of 3.566. In her junior season, Evensen appeared in three games as a defender against Stetson, Winthrop and Saint Mary's.
Soenksen earned a cumulative GPA of 3.802 and graduated with degrees in international affairs and Chinese in May. The Encinitas, Calif. native, was named to the MPSF All-Academic team three years in a row. Her athletic achievements earned her the CU Career Achievement Award, on top of her IWLCA All-America Third Team, all-region and all-league selections in 2017. Soenksen finished the season with a 15-4 mark with 143 saves and 39 groundballs. Her save percentage of 0.491 led the MPSF and was 12th in the NCAA, while her 7.31 goals against average was fourth nationally.
The 2017 team was also named as an IWLCA Zag Sports Academic Honor Squad for the 2016-17 academic year, marking its third straight season receiving this honor. To earn this award, teams must have posted a 3.0 or higher GPA for the year; Colorado achieved a 3.239 GPA.
