Women’s Golf Wins CDA Resort Collegiate Invitational, Hodgkins Medalist

September 27, 2017 | Women's Golf

COEUR D'ALENE, IDAHO – With a school record 834, the University of Colorado women's golf team put together its most dominating performance in school history here Tuesday at the Coeur D'Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational hosted by Gonzaga.

The Buffaloes had an impressive win carding a 282-268-284—834 or 18-under par final scorecard. The 834 is now the school record for the Low 54-hole score on any par. It also marks the school record on a par 71 course by 34 strokes (868) which came in 2015 at the Pac-12 Championships.

"We pulled off the win today," head coach Anne Kelly said. "We probably didn't play our best golf, but I was still really proud of the team and proud of how they hung in there and fought hard."

The Buffs took home the victory at 18-under par 834. Illinois finished seven strokes back at 11-under par 841. BYU came in third with a final scorecard of 287-282-285—854. Fresno State moved up three spots to finish fourth at 8-over par 860, while New Mexico rounded out the top-five teams at 10-over par 862.

Individually, sophomore Kirsty Hodgkins won her first career tournament putting together a dominating perfomance. Hodgkins now becomes the ninth individual and 13th overall medalist for the Buffaloes. She finished with a final scorecard of 68-65-70—203 to break the school record for lowest 54-hole score on a par 71 course and second overall for any par. Hodgkins finished at 10-under par 203 to give her the third best performance all time for CU, for strokes under par in a tournament. She also set a school record for the most consecutive rounds under par with five in a row. She was 1-under 71 at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational and was under par in all three rounds here at the CDA Resort Collegiate Invite. Hodgkins dominated the field leading in par-4 and par-5 scoring. She also collected 15 birdies and 34 pars throughout the tournament.

"I was really happy for Kirsty for getting her first collegiate win, but Robyn was giving her a good run for her money so that was exciting to see. Unfortunately, Robin had a rough last few holes. They did both birdie 17 so it was really close there."

Robyn Choi finished tied for second overall only four strokes behind Hodgkins at 6-under par 72-65-70—207, a career best finish. Choi's 207 is the third lowest 54-hole score on a par 71 course in school history and fourth lowest for any par. Choi led the entire field in birdies collecting 17. Her 6-under par ties her for sixth best in school history for strokes under par in a tournament.

Senior Brittany Fan closed out the tournament at 1-over 72 to giver her a final scorecard of 70-70-72—212 or 1-under par to finish tied for 12th. This marks her eighth straight top-20 finish, which is the fourth longest streak in school history. Her round one performance of 17 pars and one birdie ties the record for most pars in a round for the fifth time in school history. Fan also collected an impressive 41 pars over the three days, which is second best among the field

Freshman Alisha Lau is quickly stepping into an important role for the Buffs as she carded a 4-over 77-68-72—217 three round total to move up and place tied for 26th. Lau's 217 is the seventh lowest 54-hole score on a par 71 course. Additionally, her 68 from the second round is the sixth lowest 18-hole score on a par 71 course.

"The team played well, but kind of had a little rough patch," Kelly said. "We made a few bogeys around 13 and 14, but they brought it back, made some birdies, and gave us a good cushion to win by."

Gillian Vance rebounded back from her second round to finish at 1-over 72 in the third round and move up 15 places. She finished with a scorecard of 72-78-72—222 or 9-over par to place tied for 45th. Vance collected 34 pars and six birdies.

"Overall, I am very happy for the team," Kelly said. "They were able to get the win and it was nice to see the progress they are making and to see their hard work paying off. As a coach, you like to see that they aren't satisfied with where they are right now and they all have things they want to work on. It's a great bunch of young women to work with, and I am proud of them. Now we will go home, get them caught up with school, and get ready for the next one."

The Buffs will be back in action on October 10. The team will head to Sammamish, Washington to play in the Edean Invitational hosted by the University of Washington.
