Buffs Set To Compete at Joe Piane Invitational; Host Rocky Mountain Shootout

September 28, 2017 | Cross Country

BOULDER — After sitting idle for the last few weeks, the Colorado cross country teams will split up to compete at a pair of meets this weekend.

The Buffs will start the weekend on Friday, Sept. 29, in South Bend, Ind. at the Joe Piane Invitational. The meet will start at 1 p.m. ET with the women's 5-kilometer blue division race, while the men will run a 5-mile race at 1:45 p.m. Results will be available at deltatiming.com.

Colorado will have some tough top-30 competition in both races. The women's team, which is currently ranked first, will face three other top-10 teams in New Mexico (third), NC State (seventh) and Arkansas (ninth). The host, Notre Dame, is currently 12th in the poll, while Ohio State and Utah are ranked 26th and 27th, respectively. In total, there will be 20 teams in the race.

The men will race against three other top-30 teams. The men are fourth overall. Pac-12 foe Washington State is the next highest ranked team at 11th. Eastern Michigan and NC State are 29th and 30th, respectively. There will be one more team in the men's race, bringing the total to 31.

The second meet of the weekend is CU's annual Rocky Mountain Shootout, which will run on Saturday, Sept. 30 at the Buffalo Ranch Cross Country Course on CU's South Camps.

For the ninth straight year, the Rocky Mountain Shootout will have two races; open and unattached runners will compete in the same race as the collegiate competitors. The women's 5-kilometer race will start things off at 9 a.m., while the men's 8-kilometer race will follow at 9:45 a.m.

The meet is one of the longest running collegiate cross country races in the nation and will have participants from all over the Front Range, including Air Force, Northern Colorado, Colorado State and Colorado State-Pueblo. In total, there will be 13 teams in the men's race and 12 in the women's race.

The shootout has two categories for team scoring. The NCAA Division I opponents are scored against each other, while the non-Division I opponents are scored as one, resulting in two team champions per gender. There is only one individual winner per gender.

CU's men have won the last 26 shootout titles and 27 of the last 31. The last men's Division I team to beat the Buffs was BYU in 1990. The women have won the previous 18 titles and 24 of the last 25 races.

Results will be available at CUBuffs.com upon the conclusion of the race. Admission and parking are free.
