BOULDER – Senior Jeannez Daniel and freshman Linda Huang are still alive for a championship in the Gold Draw of the 2017 Colorado Invitational after the second day of action here Friday at the South Campus Tennis Courts.
After a weather delay this morning to allow the courts to dry, the action got underway about Noon and all the scheduled action was completed save or one match. The tournament consists of three different draws, Black, Gold and Silver. The only match left to be finished was between Linda Huang and New Mexico's Hsiang-Wen Huang, which was suspended with Linda Huang up 7-6, 2-3.
BLACK DRAW:
Junior Annabelle Andrinopoulos defeated Oklahoma's Marlene Stripp in the first round, 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 and then fell to Diana Wong from New Mexico, 7-5, 7-5 to close out the day. She will face New Mexico State's Lindsay Harlas in the third place match on Saturday.
Senior Louise Ronaldson fell to New Mexico's Ruth Copas in the first round, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 and then to Oklahoma's Camila Romero, 6-3, 6-3 in the second match of the day. She will face New Mexico State's Rebecca Keijzerwaard on Saturday.
GOLD DRAW:
Daniel defeated New Mexico's Bronte Murgett, 6-2, 6-2 to open the day and then in a two hour match against teammate Chloe Hule, Daniel came out on top 7-6 (6), 7-5, to advance to the Gold Draw Championship match Saturday. Hule defeated New Mexico State's Yadira Rubio in the first round, 6-1, 6-2.
On the other side of the draw, Huang defeated Oklahoma's Simran Kaur Sethi, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5 before the suspended match against Hsiang-Wen Huang in the second match of the day.
SILVER DRAW:
Junior Brigitte Beck lost to Oklahoma's Christina Brigante, 6-2, 6-2 in the first round and in the back draw she fell to New Mexico's Lauren Rich, 6-2, 6-4. Junior Illana Oleynik fell to New Mexico's Danielle Quevedo, 6-4, 6-0 in the first round. She did not play a back draw match.
STAT OF THE DAY:
Daniel ended her junior campaign with six straight wins in singles and extended that streak to eight straight on Friday. That's the longest streak since former Buff Nuria Ormeo-Ruiz won 10 straight to open the 2015-16 season en route to the ITSA Regional Championship.
QUOTABLE:
"Overall, I'm really happy with the way we competed," coach Nicole Keneally said. "We showed, in times of adversity, we reacted the right way. That, to me, for a core group of our players, that's huge. It's a really good sign. We didn't necessarily get all the wins we wanted, but we made it hard for the them to beat us, they weren't easy wins. That's another huge factor in our overall success considering it's the first day of competition this season.
"Adversity when you lose a point and get frustrated, I didn't see the immediate frustration, we let it go and moved on. Some players will lose a point and then play three or four more points. Now, we may lose a point we thought we should and we we're not continuing it on to the next play, it's great.
"I want them to show up, and they should want themselves and their teammates to show up the exact same way we showed up today, maybe even more fiery. Everybody's going to be tired, it's day three of the event, but everybody's played the same. Some players had long three set matches but so did everybody, so it's all about how are you going to respond."
UP NEXT:
Action continues Saturday at South Campus and is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. The day will consist of the final rounds of singles action in the morning and then a round of doubles matches in the afternoon.
