O’Quinn Shines on Final Day of Potts Invitational
January 13, 2018 | Track and Field
BOULDER - Several University of Colorado track and field athletes shined here Saturday at the Potts Invitational. Rajon O'Quinn paced CU as the top performer of the day placing top-two in both her events.
WHAT HAPPENED, ON THE TRACK
Rajon O'Quinn put together a very strong opening 2018 indoor performance. In the 200 meters, she crossed the finish line in 24.54 seconds to win the event title. Teammates Eriana Henderson (24.78) and Tashay Brown (25.08) also placed second and fourth respectively in the event. O'Quinn went on to finish second in the 400 coming in behind Unattached CU runner Alexandria Peters. Rajon's time of 55.82 is only .4 off her PR of 55.41 from the CU Open last year.
The Buffs started the day off with the 60 meter hurdles where Alexander Billing advanced to the finals heat with a time of 8.12. In finals, Billings bolted out of the blocks and didn't stop. The junior finished strong from lane one to win the event title with a time of 8.04. This time marks his best time in the event.
Valerie Constien won the 3,000 meters event clocking a 10:02.66 time. The last time Constien won an event was last season in the mile at the Colorado open. Also in the 3,000 meters teammate Tayler Tuttle who finished second (10:19.76) and Lindsey Koch placed fourth (10:27.92).
The Buffs put together a strong showing in the women's side of the 60 meter hurdles. Valerie Welch is starting her freshman campaign off on a strong note advancing to finals with teammates Eriana Henderson and Maja Wichhcart-Donzo. The trio finished second, fourth and sixth respectively in the finals heat. Welch finished second with a time of 8.54 while Henderson came in fourth at 8.84. Wichhart-Donzo finished sixth with a time of 8.94.
In the finals of the 60 meters Jaysean Skrine placed third with a time of 7.02. For the women, Tashay Brown advanced to the finals and placed fourth with a 7.83 time.

Overall Statement
"The main function of this meet was to see who did what over the break and in other cases who didn't do what over the break. And this year, similar to the past years, we did some things well, while others need some tuning up. We'll take that information, put it into our planning, get ready for three weeks from now."
On Top Performer
"Our top performer of the weekend was Rajon. She was the high point scorer, looks like she's in good shape, and back to work."
On Alexander Billings 60 meter hurdles
"For Alexander to start out with a PR is good. I think he may have stepped up to a level of consistency and maturity that we were waiting for."
On the young talent
Another important goal today was to finally see how the new people looked under the gun. A lot of people look pretty good, especially since they just got back Monday, so I'm happy.
On Val's 3,000 meter run victory
"It's her best run in a few years. Valerie's had ups and downs. She is principally a steeplechaser so the flat 3000 is indicative of what's coming outdoors when she gets to her specialty. That was a good run for Valerie for now, but she'll be better in three weeks."
