October 01, 2018 | Women's Golf
WILMETTE, Ill. — The University of Colorado women's golf team finished the first day of the Windy City Collegiate Classic in 11th, shooting a 27-over 603 (301-302) here today at Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette, Ill.
Â
"It was a tough day for us," head coach Anne Kelly said. "This is a very difficult and challenging course."
Â
Pac-12 Conference teams own the top three positions after the first 36 holes. Arizona leads the tournament after the first two rounds with a 1-under 575 (289-286), and Southern California is second with just one more stroke through two rounds (286-290—576). Arizona State is third currently after shooting a 2-over 577 (294-283).
Â
The Buffs did not get out to the best start, shooting a 13-over 301. As a team, the second round did not get better with CU earning a 14-over 302. The good news is the Buffs are just one stroke behind 10th-place Iowa State (602) and are four strokes behind South Carolina and Purdue, which are tied for eighth after finishing with a 23-over 599.
Â
Junior Robyn Choi was the highlight of the day as she earned a 3-under 141 through 36 holes, which is fifth overall and is just six strokes from the leader. She became the first Buff this season to record an eagle, the seventh of her career, on a par 5, 481-yard No. 8 in the front nine during the first round. Her 18 holes also consisted of four birdies, eight pars, four bogeys and one double, which totaled an even 72. Choi came back in the second round and played a very consistent game with three birdies and 15 pars for a 3-under 69.
Â
"Robyn played very solid golf," Kelly said. "She was very consistent and managed the course extremely well."
Â
Senior Gillian Vance was second for the Buffs with another solid performance, finishing the first 18-holes with an even 72. In that round she posted four birdies and 11 pars, and also tallied two bogeys and one double. The second round wasn't quite as good as she finished with a 6-over 78, totaling 150 for the day and tying her for 33rd overall.
Â
"Gillian also had a great first round," said Kelly. "Like I said, it's as long and difficult golf course and Gillian played really well in the morning round. She struggled a bit in the afternoon, but came back solid in the back nine."
Â
Junior Kirsty Hodgkins ended the day tied for 47th after shooting a nine-over 153. She started the day with a 78 (six-over par) in the first round and lower her score in the second round with a three-over 75. Through 36 holes, she recorded three birdies, 22 pars, 10 bogeys and one double.
Â
Freshman Malak Boureada shot a 15-over 159 (79-80), which included one birdie, 21 pars, 12 bogeys and one double. Senior Haley Nist ended the day with a 17-over 161 (81-8), which tied her for 68th. She had one birdie, 19 pars, 14 bogeys and two doubles. Â

In the first 18 holes, she had four birdies and seven pars and the second 18 saw her record 14 pars. She also added 10 bogeys and one double for her score.
