The CU women are now the No. 1 team in the country

Women Move Into First In the USTFCCCA Poll

BOULDER — For the first time this season, the University of Colorado women's cross country team is the top-ranked team in the country, according to the USTFCCCA Coaches Poll, which was released on Tuesday afternoon. CU's men are also ranked in the poll, coming in at 11th.
The women had been ranked second in the first four polls of the season, but moved up to the top spot after defeating then-top-ranked New Mexico by 50 points (80-130) at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Sept. 28. The Buffs earned the team win, while UNM was third. CU beat the runner-up, then-No. 5 Boise State, 80-91.
CU placed a pair of harriers in the top 10. Dani Jones led the team with a fourth place finish, while Makena Morley was sixth. The Buffs also had a duo of athletes in the top 20 as Sage Hurta finished 13th and Tabor Scholl was 19th. Their final finisher was Tayler Tuttle, who recorded a 38th place finish.
Both BSU and UNM each had three harriers in the top 10. The Broncos finished 5-9-10-26-41; while the Lobos went 2-3-7-35-83.
The Buffs have been ranked No. 1 in the USTFCCCA poll 11 times in the last three seasons. They have not been ranked outside of the top five since 2013 and have not been ranked outside of the top 10 since 2014.
The CU women recorded all 11 first-place votes for 330 points to finish 15 points in front of BSU (315). New Mexico fell to third with 304 points. The Pac-12 has two other teams in the top five with Oregon fourth (295) and Stanford fifth (290).
The men moved to 11th in the poll after receiving 214 points, three less than 10th-rated Air Force (217). The top two positions in the poll did not change as Northern Arizona remained first and BYU second. Wisconsin jumped up six spots to third in the poll, while Portland dropped one spot to fourth. Stanford rounds out the poll at fifth.
The men's team fell out of the top 10 for the first time since 2008. CU finished eighth at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, but were racing without All-American Joe Klecker, who, according to head coach Mark Wetcome, was "a little banged up." They did return John Dressel to the line-up for the first time in a year and he led the Buffs with an 11th place finish. Eduardo Herrera also placed in the top 20, finishing 18th overall.
CU's other scorers at the meet were Ryan Forsyth (34th), Ethan Gonzales (84th) and Paxton Smith (140th).
In the regional polls, the CU women are ranked first, while the men moved from third to fifth this week behind NAU, BYU, Colorado State and Air Force.
The Buffs will be off this weekend, but will return to Madison, Wis. on Oct. 13 for the NCAA Pre-National Invitational.
