Buffs Move Into a Tie At Eighth After The Second Round At The Betsy Rawls Invitational
October 20, 2018 | Women's Golf
AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Colorado women's golf team moved into a tie for eighth at the Betsy Rawls Invitational after shaving five strokes off its first round score, finishing the day with an 18-over 306.
Â
The Buffs have recorded a 41-over 617 through two rounds at the University of Texas Golf Course and are tied with Texas A&M (308-309--617). Texas, which led after the first round, is tied after the second round with Kent State. Both UT and KSU are currently 1-under (575). Â
Â
"Today was a little better for our team," head coach Anne Kelly said. "It was definitely not up to our standards, but the members are getting a lot of good experience on a tough golf course. It's a challenge when two of our main players are not here, meaning Robyn (Choi), who of course is trying to qualify for the LPGA, and also Alisha (Lau), who is out with a wrist injury and recovering from surgery.
Â
"But the players here are learning a lot and are doing the things necessary to improve and have their games ready when we hit the heart of our season in the spring. We will go out tomorrow determined to move up and make fewer mental errors."
Â
All five Buffs started on the back nine and four of the five improved their scores on the second day, which helped bring down the team score.
Â
Junior Kirsty Hodgkins continued to lead the Buffs and moved up one spot into a tie for 19th. She recorded a 2-over 74, which was one stroke better than her first round score, and is currently at a five-over 149. She started the day making par on the first hole, but then recorded a double. She made par on the following two holes before earning her first of four birdies on the day. She finished out the back nine with two pars, one birdie and one bogey, which put her at a 1-over 37. The second half of the round started with two consecutive pars. She got back to even on the day after shooting another birdie at hole No. 3 and completed her round with three pars, one birdie, one bogey and one double.
Â
Senior Gillian Vance moved up one spot into a tie for 34th after finishing the second round with a 3-over 75, two strokes better than her five-over 77 on day one. She recorded just one birdie on the day, which came on her third hole of the round. She played a pretty consistent round, totaling 13 pars and four bogeys in addition to her birdie.
Â
Freshman Malak Bouraeda recorded a 7-over 79 and is now 13-over (78-79 – 157), which is tied for 49th. She recorded a bogey on her first hole, but then bounced back with a birdie on the following hole. She made four straight pars after that, before posted a pair of bogeys and a double at the end of the first nine at a 4-over 40. In the final nine holes, she recorded six pars and three bogeys. Â
Â
Sophomore Elle Otten also had a very consistent day. She finished the day tied for 56th as she shot a 6-over 78 on the day. She is currently a 15-over 159 through two rounds. She had six pars and three bogeys in the first nine holes and recorded the same three bogeys and six pars in the second nine holes.
Â
Senior Haley Nist finished her day with a 10-over 82. She is tied for 69th after recording a 23-over 167 through two rounds.
Â
Texas' Hailee Copper has moved into the lead after recording a five-under 67 in the second round. When added to her even 72 from the first day, she has a five-under 139, which is two strokes better than teammate Kaitlyn Papp, who is second with a three-under 141 (71-70). Â
