Buffs In Fourth At SMU Trinity Forest Invitational
October 29, 2018 | Women's Golf
DALLAS — After the first two rounds of the SMU Trinity Forest Invitational, the University of Colorado women's golf team is in fourth place with a 17-over 593.
Â
"It wasn't a bad day considering the course," head coach Anne Kelly said. "We are short-handed, but the team made improvement from last year's performance here so far. We're hoping to finish up on a good note tomorrow and then head home."
Â
Illinois is the team leader after the first day and was the only team to finish under par. The Illini shot a 1-over 289 in the first round and earned a 4-under 284 in the second round to finish the day with a 3-under 573. Tennessee is currently second, but is seven strokes back at a 4-over 580 (288-292).
Â
The Buffs recorded a 17-over 593 over the course of the 36 holes. CU was in seventh after earning a 10-over 299 in the first round and then moved up three spots to fourth after recording a 6-over 294 in the second round. CU has a one stroke lead over Pac-12 rival Oregon State (294-300—594) and is just three strokes behind UT-San Antonio (294-296—590).
Â
Junior Kirsty Hodgkins is tied for fifth. She played two very solid and consistent rounds to lead the team with a 2-over 146. She shot a 2-over 74 through the first 18 holes, recording 16 pars and two bogeys. In the second round, she tallied four birdies and four bogeys, in addition to 10 pars, which gave her an even 72.
Â
Senior Gillian Vance also played consistent golf as she earned a pair of 3-over 75's in each round for 6-over 150, which is tied for 25th. She had three birdies, six bogeys and nine pars in the first round and followed that up with one birdie, four bogeys and 13 pars.
Â
"Gillian and Kirsty have been very consistent and solid players for us," Kelly said. "Today was no different."
Â
Freshman Malak Bouraeda had an outstanding day as she recorded her collegiate best combined first and second round score with a 4-over 148 and is tied for 17th, which is second on the team. She shot 2-over 74's in each round. Her first 18-holes saw three birdies, five bogeys and 10 pars.
Â
She had an even better performance going in the second round. After the first seven holes, she was sitting at a 1-over, but a birdie put her back at even. She made par on the following hole, but sunk her second birdie of the round to go 1-under. She recorded three consecutive pars before earning another birdie to put her at 2-under. Unfortunately she struggled on the next hole, a par 4, where she recorded a 9, putting her at 3-over. The next hole was another bogey, but she rebounded on the 18th hole with the first eagle of her collegiate career and made par on the final hole of the round to hold at 2-over.
Â
"Malak really had it going this afternoon," Kelly said. "Her whole high school golf team came out to support her, which was really neat. At one point this afternoon, she was a couple under. She was going along great and then had a really bad hole; she had a 9 on a par 4, but then she bounced back with an eagle on 18. It was disappointing for her because she had a great round going, but to see her make a comeback like that was really great."
Â
Senior Haley Nist was fourth for the Buffs on Monday, earning a 5-over 149 which is tied for 20th. She shot a 4-over 76 in the first round with one birdie, three bogeys, one double and 13 pars. The second round saw her shooting a 1-over 73 with three birdies, four bogeys and 11 pars.
Â
"I'm very proud of Haley," Kelly said. "She played much better today than she did last tournament."
Â
Sophomore Elle Otten is tied for 60th after recording a 17-over 161. She had one birdie, six bogeys, one double and 13 pars in the first round and had three birdies, four bogeys and 11 pars in the second round.
Â
"Elle had a tough day today, which is too bad because she had really been playing well and was making great strides with her game," Kelly said. "It was just one of those days where she just didn't have a feel for the green. But hopefully she will come back stronger and better tomorrow."
Â
Playing as an individual, freshman Kelsey Webster made her CU debut at the tournament. She finished the day with a 10-over 154, which is tied for 40th. In the first round, she made 12 pars, five bogeys and one double. The second round saw her record three birdies, nine pars and six bogeys.
Â
Illinois' Crystal Wang is the current leader at 3-under 141. She shot a 1-under 71 in the first round and a 2-under 70 in the second. Mikayla Bardwell (Tennessee) and Bing Singhsumalee (Illinois) are tied for second with a 2-under 142.
