Malinen undefeated after first day
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of Colorado women's tennis team won both doubles matches in the San Diego State University Fall Classic II Friday in the first day of competition.
Â
The morning started out well in San Diego as Monica Malinen and Megan Forster opened play with a 6-3 victory against a duo from Fresno State. Their teammates Brigitte Beck and Annabelle Andrinopoulos was next in victory with a close 7-5 win over a team from Utah.
Â
Colorado found far less success in the opening round of singles play with only a single victory in five attempts. Malinen was the lone victor, defeating Elisabeth Desmarais of Marquette with ease in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3.
Â
Beck had a roller coaster of a match against Lesley Foe of Marquette. After dropping the first set 6-3, Beck posted a perfect set victory of 6-0. In the final set she fell 6-2.
Â
In another singles bracket Ky Ecton fell victim in a close second set to lose to Agustina Rimoldi Godoy of host San Diego State, 6-1, 7-5. Andrinopoulos also fell in straight sets in the same bracket as Malinen, losing to Sara Choy of Stanford 6-0, 6-1. She wasn't the only one to lose to a Stanford player, as Niluka Madurawe took down Forster 6-2, 6-1.
Â
Play continues tomorrow morning with semifinal matches in doubles for both teams. Following that all five women will continue singles play with Monica competing in the semifinals of her bracket and the rest in consolation brackets. Â
