Buffs In Sixth at Bruin Wave Invitational
February 26, 2018 | Women's Golf
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The University of Colorado women's golf team is in sixth after two rounds at the Bruin Wave Invitational here Monday held at the San Luis Obispo Country Club.
Despite some struggles, the Buffaloes shot a 43-over, 619. No. 10 ranked Southern California leads the invitational at 22-over par, 598 while UCLA moved up three positions in the second round and is in second at 603. San Diego State is in third at 34-over par, 610 with No. 4 ranked Stanford only two strokes back in fourth at 612. Washington rounds out the top-five teams at 40-over par, 616.
"Interesting day for the team," head coach Anne Kelly said. "Robyn and Kirsty arrived here from Singapore yesterday evening and teed it up for 36 holes this morning. They both played very solid rounds in the morning which was amazing considering the 16-hour time difference they just came from. They both hit the wall about the 25th hole today. They gave it their all, but just didn't have anything left in the tank with jet leg and time adjustment."
Leading the way for the Buffs was senior Brittany Fan who carded a 75-77—152, or 8-over par and is tied for 10th place. Fan shot 3-over par, 75 in her first round that included one birdie, one eagle, four bogeys and a double and she was the only Buff to card an eagle in the first two rounds. Consistency kept Fan strong in the second-round recording 13 pars with a total of 24 through two rounds, which is the third best in field.
"It was a pretty solid day for Brittany," coach Kelly said. "She just has to clean up some simple stuff and she will be shooting some under-par rounds."
Sophomores Robyn Choi and Kirsty Hodgkins competed in Singapore this past weekend, arriving in San Luis Obispo yesterday. Monday, Choi recorded a 10-over par 154 after two rounds while Hodgkins shot a 11-over 155. Choi's first round consisted of four birdies against three bogeys and a double to finish at 1-over par 73. Choi coasted through her second round to finish with a scorecard of 73-81—154 and is in 19th place. Hodgkins sits just one stroke back tied for 20th (73-82—155).
Freshman Alisha Lau was the only Buff to improve scores in between the first and second rounds. Lau moved up 33 places and is tied for 39th place, carding an 83-75—158. Her first round included eight bogeys, a double and triple along with two birdies. After settling in, Lau shot a 3-over 75 in the second round to jump 33 places.
Gillian Vance carded a 25-over par, 169. In the first-round, Vance carded an 11-over par, 83 and posted a 14-over 86 second round with four doubles and six bogeys.
"Alisha really played a solid round for us this afternoon," coach Kelly said. "It was great to see her make such a good come back. This is an extremely difficult golf course under normal circumstances, but then the wind in the rain picked up this afternoon which made the course even more challenging. It is a strong field in this event and we are going to give it our best effort to improve and move up the leader board tomorrow."
No. 2 ranked golfer (GolfStat) Lilia Vu of UCLA sits atop the leader board as the only golfer under par at 4-under 140. Stanford's Albane Valenzuela is in second place at 1-over 145 with Jennifer Chamg (USC)and Mariel Galdiano (UCLA) just two strokes back tied for third at 3-over par, 147. Sara Kjellker of San Diego State rounds out the top five at 5-over par, 149.
The final round gets under way Tuesday with a shotgun start at 7:45 am PT.
