Women Finish Strong With A School Record On Final Day Of CU Invite
February 03, 2018 | Track and Field
BOULDER - The University of Colorado track and field team closed out the 2018 CU Invitational here Saturday. The women put together multiple strong performances including a 4x400 school record.
Ā
WHAT HAPPENED: On The Women's SideĀ
The women's 4x400 relay team of Rajon O'Quinn, Valerie Welch, Eriana Henderson and Gabby Scott capped off the night with a first-place finish to go along with their new school record of 3:42.13. The previous record, 3:45.11, was set in 2012 at the MPSF Indoor Championships. The second place relay team crossed the finish line seven seconds late (3:49.05).Ā
Ā
"It's the first time the A team was put together this season," Head coach Mark Wetmore said. "They ran well, but they could run even better."
Ā
A duo of CU runners took the top two spots in the women's 3,000 meters. Makena Morley finished first with a strong PR time of 9:20.57 and Erin Clark clocked in behind her at 9:21.41.
Ā
"At this time of the year the things we're hoping for are developmental performances towards either scoring at the conference meet, or qualifying for the NCAA, when their two times are converted for the elevation there's a really good chance they qualified for the NCAA today, which was not at all expected."
Ā
CU sprinter Eriana Henderson put together a very strong day. She placed second in the women's 60 meter hurdles with a PR time of 8.60, beating her qualifying time by 0.17. Also in the hurdle finals was freshman Valerie Welch where she shaved 0.24 off her qualifying time to finish in third with a time of 8.67.
Ā
"Burke's doing a good job with her. She's definitely ahead of a year ago."
Ā
Later on, in the afternoon, Henderson placed third in the women's 200 meters with a PR time of 24.63. With two unattached runners taking first and second, (Natasha Gay and Unattached CU runner Peters) Henderson was the first collegiate athlete to cross the finish line with her PR time of 24.63. Tashay Brown also set a PR time of 24.71, earning her a fourth-place finish. Ā
Ā
Freshman Baylee Jones earned a second-place finish in the women's mile with a time of 5:04.19, beating her previous PR by 4.63 seconds.
Ā
In the women's 400 meters a duo of Buffs competed. Gabby Scott and Rajon O'Quinn finished 1,2 respectively for collegiate athletes. Unattached CU sprinter, Alexandria Peters took first with a time of 55.32, Scott earned second place with a time of 55.51 and her teammate O'Quinn earned third with a time of 56.31.
Ā
In the women's 800 meters, the Mann sisters went head to head where Elissa Mann took second place with a time of 2:07.32. Her time now ranks in the top 25 of the current MPSF conference standings. Finishing right behind her in third place was Karina Mann who set a new PR time of 2:10.35.
Ā
On The Men's Side
Ryan Forsyth stole the show in the men's 3,000 meters with an impressive time of 8.11.14 before altitude conversion. The second and third place finalists finished with times of 8.13.36 and 8.16.47 respectively. Today's time ranks Forsyth in the top 15 of the MPSF standings for 2017-18. Teammate Ethan Gonzales also ran a very strong race finishing in third with a time of 8:16.47.
Ā
"Ryan [Forsyth] and Ethan [Gonzales] were being smart," Wetmore said. "The CSU guy was trying to get an NCAA qualifying mark, and went out pretty hard. We knew we didn't want to try for that. It turned out that it was a little too hard for him. Ryan was in a good position to close hard and ran a very fast time - by far his very best time when converted to sea level. Also, a very good time for Ethan, his best ever."
Ā
Freshman sprinter Jon Maas made his first appearance of the season in the 400 meters this afternoon with a 7th place finish. His time of 48.36 is the top time for that event for the Buffaloes this season.
Ā
Worth mentioning, freshman Josh Ramos finished sixth in the men's 800-meter final with a PR of 1.53.15, cutting his previous best by over three seconds (1.56.71). After placing first in the third heat of the preliminaries by a time of 8.10, Alexander Billing took fourth in the men's 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.14.
Ā
The men's team ended the afternoon with a victory in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3.13.32, ranking as a top five MPSF finish through the 2017-18 season. The men shaved time off of their 3.16.95 finish earlier this season at the Potts Invitational just last month.
Ā
"My favorite performance of the day would probably be Makena [Morley]," Wetmore said. "It is going to convert to 9.05 which has always made it to NCAA. There were a lot of good things today. There were a lot of good things in the 800 meters. It was a good all-around weekend for us. It was a little better than I would have anticipated. Now we hop on a plane and go to sea level next week."
