Kiernan’s Career Day Lifts No. 16 Colorado Past California

April 15, 2018 | Lacrosse

BERKELEY, Calif. – Senior attacker Darby Kiernan became the Colorado career assists leader and set the CU single-game points record (10) as she helped the Buffs to an 18-11 victory against the California Bears on Sunday afternoon.  Kiernan also tied CU's single-game goals record as well with seven.

Kiernan recorded her record-breaking 65th assist on the first goal of the game, but she did not stop there as she led both teams with seven goals and added three assists for 10 points.

The Buffs are now 11-4 overall and have an 8-1 mark in Pac-12 play with one game remaining in the regular season. The Bears dropped to 6-10 overall (2-7 Pac-12).

WHAT HAPPENED: Both teams scored a pair of goals in the opening five minutes. CU scored the first marker with Sophie Castillo scoring off a pass from Kiernan, but then the Bears tallied the next two to take a 2-1 lead. Miranda Stinson tied the game up at 2-2 at 25:35 when she scored her first of the game.

Kiernan recorded her first goal of the game less than a minute later, converting on the free-position attempt to put the Buffs back in the lead (3-2) and Stinson found the back of the net for the second time of the game at 22:19. Kiernan then recorded back-to-back goals to give the Buffs a 6-2 lead before the first 10 minutes of the frame had gone by, forcing the Bears to use a timeout.  Kiernan could not be slowed down and she recorded her fourth goal of the game with 19:32 left in the first half (7-2).

The Bears were able to respond a while later with their own back-to-back goals to get within three points before halftime (7-4).

Colorado scored the first goal in the second frame as Samantha Nemirov earned her first marker of the game (26:38), but California answered back at 25:57 to bring the CU lead back to three goals (8-5). Anna Collawn tallied a goal at 24:45, but again, the Bears answered back.

Stinson and Kiernan added another two goals to put the Buffs up 11-6 before Cal responded with a pair of goals of its own, again cutting CU's lead to three (11-8). CU then recorded a pair of goals from Kiernan and Castillo to put the Buffs up by five (13-8) with 16:34 left to play.

Kiernan notched her seventh goal of the game at 13:46 to give the Buffs a 14-8 advantage, which was short-lived as Cal scored at 13:02 and again at 9:59.

At that point, the Buffs went on a 4-0 run with a pair of goals from Castillo and another two from Stinson to take an 18-10 lead with less than two minutes remaining. Cal managed to score once more (18-11), but that is where the score would stay as the clock ran out.

NOTABLE:
  • Two Buffs have scored at least one point in every game this season: Samantha Nemirov and Darby Kiernan.
  • CU leads the all-time series 4-2 and has won the last four meetings between the two teams.
  • On the first goal of the game, Kiernan recorded her 65th career assist, which made her CU's all-time career assists leader.
  • Kiernan tied a CU single-game record with seven goals in the game. The only other person to record seven goals in a single game is Miranda Stinson.
  • Kiernan also set the CU single-game record with 10 points (seven goals and three assists) in the win. The previous record was nine, which was set by Miranda Stinson on March 12, 2017.

QUOTES:
Head Coach Ann Elliott
"I thought today we came out a little slow, but we were able to keep fighting and make the plays we needed too. Overall, we know we have to keep getting better, and keep focusing on playing aggressive and disciplined lacrosse on both ends of the field. We are excited to leave California with two wins and to get back to Boulder and get focused on our last regular season game."
