Buffs Finish Weekend of Competition in Palo Alto
April 22, 2018 | Track and Field
The track team finished competing at the Cardinal Classic with new personal bests and NCAA marks.
BOULDER – The Colorado track and field team finished their weekend of competition with another great day at Stanford. There were several NCAA qualifying marks and season bests for the Buff athletes.
Valerie Welch finished second in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.10, and Alexander Billing finished second in the men's 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.38. "I think we had another good day. Coach Bockman had an excellent weekend. The long hurdlers did well today and yesterday, and then some nice races for Valerie and Alex today – both season bests," head coach Mark Wetmore said.  Â
Davion Taylor finished second in the men's 100-meter dash, clocking in at 10.56. "Davion looked real good in the 100. He's improving rapidly. I think he'll go below 10.40 this season" Wetmore said.
Val Constien achieved an NCAA qualifying mark in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase coming in at 10:15.15. "Val Constien surprised me in the Steeple. She ran about 10 seconds faster than I expected, a qualifying mark for the NCAA first round too," Wetmore said.
Karina Mann ran an impressive 1500-meter race, finishing second and clocking in at 4:33.05. Sage Hurta also competed well, finishing third in her section with a time of 4:13.68. "Sage was smart, patient and confident, 4:13 is high on our all-time list, and our second fastest sophomore ever," said Wetmore.
"I think we ended the weekend with 15 or 16 new or improved NCAA qualifying marks. More than I expected. All in all, a useful weekend," Wetmore told me. Up next, the Buffs are looking ahead to the Pac-12s as well as the NCAA championships in May.
