Buffaloes Fourth After Second Round At Pac-12 Championship

April 23, 2018 | Women's Golf

Fan Tied For 5th Overall, Choi Tied For 9th

SEATTLE – The University of Colorado is in fourth place after two rounds of the 2018 Pac-12 Conference Women's Golf Championship at the Broadmoor Golf Club.

The No. 20 ranked Buffaloes matched their day one score at 3-over, 291, and although they moved down one notch from third, their position leaves them in striking distance at 6-over, 582, heading into Tuesday's final round.

No. 3 UCLA is the overall leader at 3-under, 573, taking a six-shot lead into the final round. Colorado is just three spots out of second, currently occupied by No. 4 USC at 3-over. No. 13 Arizona, who had the best round of the day at 3-under, is 4-over for the championship.

Individually, senior Brittany Fan shot a 1-under par 71 and sophomore Robyn Choi was even at 72 as both enter the final day in the Top 9. Fan's second-consecutive subpar round put her at 3-under, 141, and tied for fifth overall, only three strokes off UCLA teammates and co-leaders Patty Tavatanakit and Lilia Vu, both at 6-under, 138.

Choi is two shots behind Fan, tied for ninth with a 1-under, 143.

"The team is competing very hard and although we're disappointed with a few mistakes and missed opportunities, they really fought back coming in," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "We are enjoying the challenge and look forward to tomorrow. Hopefully we can clean up a few of our errors, make a few more birdies and then we'll see what happens."

For the second-straight day, the Buffaloes finished strong, although round two didn't provide the same vault up the leaderboard as the first day where the team picked up five strokes on the final eight holes. On Monday, Colorado was at 3-over after the front nine, and held its ground through the rest of the round.

Fan and Choi had a lot to do with that late success. The duo combined for 10 birdies and collectively played the back nine at 4-under.

Fan had the more dramatic of the two late surges. She found herself at 3-over par through 11, but rattled off five birdies over the next six holes to jump back into the Top 5. Fan logged three straight birdies at the par-4 No. 12, par-5 No. 13 and par-3 No. 14. After a par at No. 15, she birdied the next two before closing out the round at 1-under.

"Brittany had a rough stretch of holes, but came back with a bunch of birdies which show what a strong competitor she is," Kelly said.

Choi was 1-over on the front nine, beginning her round with seven straight pars before a bogey at No. 8. She birdied the par-4 No. 10 to get back to even. Choi then birdied three of the final six holes, although a pair of bogeys at No. 16 and No. 17 prevented her from climbing even higher on the leaderboard.

Sophomore Kirsty Hodgkins shot a 1-over 73, to move into a tie for 20th at 4-over, 148. Hodgkins stayed close to even the entire day, not wavering outside a stroke below or above par. She was 1-under after a birdie at the par-4 No. 4 but fell to 1-over with a double at No. 5. Hodgkins rose back to even with her second birdie of the day, at the 236-yard par-4 No. 7.  Hodgkins remained at even through 11, before dropping a stroke at No. 12, but regrouped immediately with a birdie at No. 13. She stayed even through 17 before ending at 1-over.

"Kirsty is getting back on track and played very solid golf despite a double bogey on No. 5," Kelly said.

Freshman Alisha Lau matched her round one total, shooting a 3-over 75. Lau played the front nine even, carding birdies at a pair of par-4s at No. 4 and No. 6, but dropped a stroke at No. 5 and at No. 8. She fell to 3-over on the first three holes of the back, but played even over the last six holes, highlighted by a birdie at the 422-yard par-5 No. 13 for the second-straight day. Lau is tied for 27th overall at 6-over, 150.

Junior Gillian Vance improved on her day one total by a couple strokes shooting an 8-over 80. She bogeyed the first two holes but picked up her first of two birdies on the front at the par-3 No. 3. She made par on three of the next four holes and recorded her second birdie at No 8 to finish the front at 2-over. Vance is in 54th place with an 18-over 162.

Colorado will pair with Arizona for Tuesday's final round, teeing off at 10:40 a.m. MT.

NOTES: Fan's 141 score ties Jenny Coleman (2013) for the second-best score after 36 holes at a conference tournament in team history. Choi's 143 is tied for fourth…Fan's 141 through 36 holes ties for her third best of the season. She has shot 140 twice, most recently the Meadow Club Women's Collegiate, where she took medalist honors…Hodgkins' 25 pars over the first two rounds is tied for the lead in the field. Fan's nine birdies are tied for fifth in the field.
