Hurta, Mann post season-best times
CORVALLIS, Ore. — Two University of Colorado performers shined here Saturday in the Oregon State High Performance Meet.
Six Buffaloes in all competed in the 800-meter run, Saturday's most popular event, with the field divided into several sections competing throughout the afternoon as 109 athletes signed up for the two races, 60 men and 49 women.
Sophomore Sage Hurta won her third 800-meter run in as many tries this spring, winning the first section in a 2:04.43 time, besting Laurence Cote of MathSport by a quarter of a second. In posting her career best time in the event, she lopped over two seconds off her previous best this year of 2:06.53 that she ran at the Stanford Cardinal Classic last Saturday, with her old PR of 2:06.37 also shattered.
Junior Karina Mann finished second in the second section of the 800, clocked in a 2:09.65 time, a little over a quarter-second behind the University of British Columbia's Nicola Symonds' winning time of 2:09.37. It was Mann's second-fastest time this spring season. Her twin sister, Elissa Mann, finished sixth in the first section in a 2:05.75 time, which was the junior's season-best time, over a second faster than her time in last month's Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge.
"Sage ran her fastest time ever, which was impressive especially after running the steeplechase the night before," CU head coach Mark Wetmore said. "The steeple tends to beat you up a bit, so we're real pleased with her result. And Elissa coming in a bit behind her, posting her fastest time of the season was also good."
Both had already previously qualified for the NCAA's, but it does move them up on the national performance lists. "It will make things challenging for the coaches, trying to decide who to slot where for the Pac-12's," Wetmore said.
The Buffs also had three men compete, the highest finish posted by sophomore Nathan Pixler, who finished third in his section with a 1:54.29 time. It was his second fastest time this spring.
"The men didn't have a brilliant day, not too much to speak of," Wetmore said. "Right around then the weather conditions turned, getting a little rainy and breezy so that had an effect on things."
Colorado will compete next in two meets next weekend, the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford this Thursday (May 3) and the Air Force Twilight in Colorado Springs on Friday (May 4). The first portion of the Pac-12 Championships are next weekend, the multi-events which will also take place in Palo Alto with Stanford serving as host.
