Dani Jones
Buffs Advance Current and Former Athletes to Finals of USATF Championships
June 21, 2018 | Track and Field
BOULDER – University of Colorado female athletes competed in the first rounds of the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 1,500-meter run today at the USATF Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.
The steeplechase was the first event the Buffs participated in today. Sage Hurta competed for the Buffs and ran alongside professional runners and former CU athletes Emma Coburn and Shalaya Kipp. Hurta placed ninth in her heat, clocking in at 10:08.77.
"Today went about to form. Sage needs to rest now," CU head coach Mark Wetmore said. "It has been a long year for a young runner. One gets a little stronger, able to last a bit longer, year by year. She will take a break, and then get to work on her cross country preparation."
Coburn and Kipp will all compete in the finals of the women's steeplechase that will take place on Saturday, June 23 at 2:20 p.m. mountain time.
The next event for the Buffs was the women's 1,500-meter run. Dani Jones ran for the Buffs, crossing the finish line in 4:08.82, earning 6th place in her heat.
"Dani ran the way we planned. Maybe out a tad faster than would be optimal. That cost her in the late stages, so we had to sweat out the next heats, waiting to see how the time qualifiers unfolded," Wetmore said. "Ultimately, she got through, and I don't know if that would have happened had she run another way. She will be the only college runner in the final."
Professional runners and former Buffs Jenny Simpson, Sara Sutherland and Sara Vaughn also ran the event. Jones and Simpson have advanced to the finals of the women's 1,500 and are set to race on Saturday June 23 at 2:46 p.m. mountain time.
"The pros did what they are supposed to do, Jenny and Shalaya. Both careful and controlled. So, we have a good group into Saturday's finals. Next up are our men on Saturday. So far, so good," Wetmore said.
