Buffs Battle Rams To Scoreless Draw
August 19, 2018 | Soccer
BOULDER – The University of Colorado soccer team battled in-state rival Colorado State to a scoreless draw on Sunday, moving to 1-0-1 on the young season.
The draw marks the second consecutive meeting between the two teams that has ended 0-0. Like last season's meeting, the Buffs controlled play for much of the 110-minute match but failed to find a decisive goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Scout Watson started the game in goal for the Buffs after keeping a clean sheet in the second half of Thursday's match at Air Force. The Buffs opened the game attacking, creating several chances in the early going. The Buffs' defense set the tone, however, surrendering just three shots throughout the first half.
CU turned up the pressure coming out of the halftime locker room. One of the match's best chances came in the 48thminute when CSU goalkeeper Hunter Peifer stopped Megan Massey's shot from inside the box. Libby Geraghty fired a rebound back on net but missed just wide.
Taylor Kornieck seemed to be building a strong connection with LSU transfer Jorian Baucom, creating a handful of chances off of one another in the second half. In the 60thminute, Kornieck lobbed a ball ahead to Baucom, who corralled the ball in the box and fired a shot that was saved.
Just after regaining possession, the Rams had their best opportunity of the day. A breakdown in the Colorado defense left Jalen Tompkins, who entered the game at halftime, one-on-one with a CSU attacking player. Tompkins reacted fast, making an acrobatic save to knock the ball away from the right side of the goal.
In the 84thminute, Libby Geraghty struck a perfectly-placed corner into the box that found Jesse Loren's head, but the ball sailed narrowly over the crossbar.
After battling to a scoreless stalemate through 90-minutes, overtime proved to be more of the same.
The Buffs controlled the first overtime period from the kick, with Marty Puketapu finding one great chance after another. Perhaps the Buffs' best opportunity of the day came in the 96thminute, when Puketapu fired the ball from close range into what appeared to be an empty net. CSU defender Lexi Swenson made a remarkable play at the goal line to keep the ball out.
CU continued to attack until the final whistle, sending two shots on goal in the final minutes of action.
KEY STATISTICS: The Buffs outshot CSU by a final tally of 30-11, but only 10 of those 30 shots were on goal. 20 Colorado players played, making it the second consecutive match the Buffs have played at least 20 player. Two CU players, Taylor Kornieck and Hannah Cardenas were on the field for the entire 110 minutes. Colorado's goalkeepers Scout Watson and Jalen Tompkins have split time thus far, combining for 200 shutout-minutes on the season; Tompkins has been in goal for 110 of 200 minutes, while Watson has played 90.

On Colorado State consistently being a tough matchup
"We would like to think we have tried all different kind of ways to approach it but every year it is like this. I think what was a little disappointing for us is that we started to care when it was too late. You have to care in the first minute as much as you do in the 109thminute. All of a sudden you see the two overtimes. With how many chances we created in those 20 minutes, we created more chances in those 20 minutes than we did in the first 90 minutes of the game. Credit to CSU. It wasn't like they packed it in. It wasn't like they didn't have chances. Obviously, we had a lot more chances. I think maybe when we got into overtime, they were holding off for the draw a little bit, which on the road, is a smart decision. Credit to them, they deserve to get something out of this game. We didn't do enough to get something out of this game. Even if we did get a win, there would still be a lot of question marks. We have to be ready for Mizzou next Saturday."
On the performance of Colorado State's goalkeepers
"Thirty shots in 110 minutes – I think we needed to test them more. I thought we had opportunities where they dealt with the chances we put on and a couple of really good saves. I also feel we put ourselves in spots where we let them off the hook by not being clinical in what we are doing – not having just a little bit of composure. I can't remember the last time we had 30 shots. It has probably been a while. Once again, like I told the team, it is the second game of the season. We are still undefeated, we haven't giving up a goal, and we have a really good SEC team coming in on Saturday. We have to lick our wounds a little bit and get ready on Tuesday to get back after it."
On settling in on a consistent rotation
"I think there were players that maybe could have gotten little bit more time today but you kind of get in the situation and kind of get in the moment. I thought we were still fresh. But especially the second games of the weekend. Thursday wasn't a test for us physically but it is when you have those two games in the weekend. I thought that the players that came off the bench did well. They put themselves in a position to compete to start so we'll sort that out next week."

On Colorado State being a tough matchup for Colorado
"I think any in-state rivalry is going to be tough no matter who the team is. I think a lot of things weren't going our way."
On luck not being on the side of Colorado's attack so far this season
"I definitely think so. I think we are just going to keep working at it and we are going to get our groove back."
On being optimistic about the chances created so far this season
"I think in the first half, we kept playing to find the long ball and it just wasn't going our way. [In the] second half, we connected at feet at a lot. We got a lot of good chances so I am really excited for the upcoming games."
